Though I'm young, I take pride in the fact that every last piece of gear I own was bought with money I earned doing video monkeywork.

But then, with the pocket money I got I wouldn't have been able to afford anything anyway. And "graduation money"? HA! A slap on the back and a "now go get a job" was all I got.

I felt really deprived when I first came on this site comparing my gear list to theirs, but then I realized two things:

A) A lot of people on here ONLY have synths, not drums and guitars

B) A lot of the people on here have had more time to get gear. I've only been a musician since 13, and just got my first job in january. I'm 17 now... And just got "into" synths like 4 months ago.

1986: My trusty JX-3P (first synth, still have it, still love it) and a crappy Korg "Personal Keyboard" (gave it to my daughter) that I used for the organ sound only. I traded my Casio VL-Tone (My first introduction to ADSR) for a ticket to a Deep Purple concert. I still think it was a good trade. I ran the JX-3P in mono through an old fuzz stomp box and a fender amp. What a sound. Right after H.S. though I got a good job with more pay and picked up the Juno-106, DX21, and SH2000( I love that aftertouch growl!) then I got married with children and.............

Yeah, me too... I think that is why I buy everything I can afford now...because I never got anything expensive as a teenager.

My parents bought 2 of my 3 basses for me (all together totalling about $600 canadian) over the course of 3 years. One was when I started, one was for a birthday. My guitar was a $190 one I got for christmas.

Both synths, my main bass, and my drumkit all were bought our of my own pocket with every cent I earned (altogether about 2800 Canadian)

Fender Duo-Sonic 2 (pre-mustang) with a 1950's tweed case, The original Big Muff pedal and a fender tube amp. All which were considered pretty much c**p at the time and are worth a fair amount now. Fortunately for me, I held on to the pedal long enough to sell it for "vintage" prices. All the synth stuff at the time was expensive. or at least to me. After I graduated, I had to borrrow $300 from my parents to buy a Fender telecaster. I was totally broke. Yea, a lot of kids have a lot of stuff (which is great for them!) but I sure didn't. I did have access to my dad's bass and a 4 track.

other than my ea-1 and dr 110, my gear was all bought by my parents and money from grandparents for christmases and birthdays, combined with shrewd selling. my parents are very supportive of music, which is definitely cool.
