We used to have a musicshop in my highschoolyears (mid 90's). Every now and then when something interesting came out, I took it for the weekend and sampled it like a madman. If it was something like a Roland'ish ROMpler I didn't in fact sample the patches but the ROM voices, free of envelopes, filters and DSP's, using the correct keygroups.
Next I used these sampled sounds in my trackers.
Therefore, in those years, ranging from age 14..19 orso I had sampled stuff like this:
Roland JD800, XP50, U20, JV1000, SC88, AJuno2, JW50 (used it for a while for sequencing)
Technics KN3000, KN5000
Alesis D4
Some Bohm expander (FM iirc)
Ob.Matrix1000

Depends on how much money you wasted ... IMHO, the xp10 is fairly ok for what it is and especially for what it can be had for these days. Admittedly not comparable to the other two tho... I actually recorded a few tracks entirely with the xp10 back when I had one.edgar_0587 wrote:roland xp10 (a total waste of money)

You can get so much for so little these days... I got a DX-21 (sadly I didn't learn it at all - for becoming a guitar player from a piano player) and Fernandes FR-55 guitar for passing high school exam -- um, kinda some while ago! I had dreamed for a DX-7 but JPY 250,000 was out of reach.. Anything with wooden side panel was a thing you couldn't even allowed to touch in a music store in early 80' in Japan. More before I'd been taking Yamaha's music course since I was a little kid in 70s and for that I saw GX-1 in play for a dozen times of so, I guess I even had *touched* it once or so. That thing was really shiny then and you could have bought a house for the price! Emulator cost about 3,000,000 yen ($30000) and I STILL wonder if there may be someone who got one then on a loan (like 20 years of payment) and still in debut... With Fairlight it is very possible and there were only 3 CMIs in the country when I was in a junior high. Even Sony walkman was an expensive luxurious "gadget" then. Yamaha's lesson was done in a small group (about 10 students) with "electone"s. Those electones in the lesson facility were the lowest models of their kind and I haven't seen them on ebay or anywhere. There were various models from about $1000 - $15000 like. I never knew they were essentially "synthesizers"!

i had a twangy epiphone strat,
a chunky gemini sampler(16 secs i think w/ one fat button!),
the casio mt 500 complete w/ simmons shaped drum pads,
a yamaha ry8 drum machine,
stompies,
and my trusty porta 07.
o yeah and before all that, the two 'deluxe' belt driven turntables w/ pitch wheels spliced together so they'd fit in my one aux on my reciever(pre radio shack mixer) make me feel like the mack now.

sell me your KS5!
I had a Roland MC 505 (got it when it came out) and a Yamaha cassete 4 track. In my last year of high school I aquired a Roland SH 1000 and a pair of technics turntables. I didn't have a computer till I was in college. Oh and there was the hammond L-100 with leslie 760, and the delapidated 73 Rhodes my friend sold me for 200 bucks. Had a Juno 1 as well, but ended up selling it and getting a 106 in my first year of college. And there was other random amps and circuit bent c**p, as I got into the whole circuit bending thing around high school.
I got out of high school about six months or so ago and I had

When I got out of highskool (1977) there werent any home computers or synths available to ordinary folks. There was also no internet (for mere mortals), no wireless phones, no unleaded gas, blah blah blah.
At the time I Was a guitar player and had a Gibson S1 and some crappy peavey bass amp since i was playing bass in the bands I was in. I think I also had either a Fender Musicman bass or a fender precision or maybe a rick 4001. No keyboards at all. By 1978 I had nothing because the woman I was living with stole everything I owned. At the time that included an original Dan armstrong lucite guitar, an orig musicman stingray bass and a few other good prizes.
Ive always been a gear junkie but usually have been broke. In the last handful of years I have managed to accumulate about 20 guitars and basses (and banjos and mandolins and stuff) and about 15 synths and lots of other junk. Of course i also have 6 or 7 cars and plenty of other junk ,too. I guess i'm overcompensating for having been broke and gearless for so long.

i had a Selmer Bundy II Alto Sax (that i still have) and a broken Squier Strat that i never learned how to play...i didn't get into synths until college...and now all i have are a few Casios, and a Yamaha SHS-10, and a not broken Epiphone guitar that i still don't know how to play. how i keep getting guitars handed to me is totally beyond my comprehension...
