I'm seventeen now. About two years ago I got my microKORG as a birthday present. Since then I've accumulated a Novation supernova, SP-404, m-audio controller, macbook, and a roland R-5, and I'm saving money for a compy of protools. I borrow my dad's TD-7 drum module because the R-5 has so few drum sounds, so I just use the r-5 for sequencing with it.

i'm 36
i had a trumpet.
i had no choice.
i had a decent record collection.
i didn't buy my first guitar till i was 21, and my first porta studio at 24 ..
i too am amazed by how much equipment these kids have. i jammed with this 19 year old kid from this site a couple of times and he had some awesome s**t already..
i think it has more to do with the times. the internet can hook people up with the scoop on what's "hip" right away. back in my day you had to put alot of effort into being in "the know" about things. there was no "behind the music".. you found out about the velvet underground from some wierd kids older sister or something. in my day you had to worry about getting your a*s kicked for being into cool s**t.. these days even the jock sniffers think they know something about music..
and then theres the obvious fact that it's almost MY generation's kids who have all this stuff. maybe it's just plain old good parenting....even though the "establishment's" 80's sucked there were some cool people, and some incredibly cool s**t.. the last holdouts from the days before the media excavated and surfaced all things underground and paraded them around like it had been their idea the whole time, . these people are parents of teenagers now .

i totally dig how our ears can hear all this s**t and and we don't even do like half of it with normal instruments, and then all we gotta do is hook a speaker up to some circuits and move those circuits around and we can push our hearing to it's limits

I was 17 when I finished Yr 12 (Matric) in 1984 and it was earlier that year that I came into possession of my Juno 6. I also had a classical guitar. That was it until next year at Uni which somehow earned me a Fostex 4-track and another Roland - an SH3a. The year after that it was a Korg Poly 800ii and then the rest of my dubious collection in dribs and drabs over the ensuing 300 years.

Yeah, but now look at you!!hfinn wrote:A Fender Stratocaster which I still have. That was it.

Let's see... when I was 13 my mom bought me a Yamaha PF10 so I could learn how to play. The following year (1984) I saved all of my paper route money to put a down payment on a new Jupiter 6 ( which I sold back in 2000, so don't ask ). A year later I bought a used Juno 60, traded in my PF10 for an HS60. My junior year I worked at McDonalds and bought a used OB8 (which I traded away a few years later, so don't ask). Like an idiot I sold my Juno 60 to get my wannabe drummer friend a kit. I also used the HS60 to make a down payment on a D50 when I got out of High School. Great thread!

high school... we are talking 20 something years ago!
I had a Yamaha classical guitar, which I still have till today, and a Casio VL-Tone

In the early 1990's I got a Boss DR drum machine and it was awful!
I only started buying gear again three years ago with the Ion.

Now I have a job so I can probably afford both cds, gear, and beer.

I graduated from high school in 1975. I had a crappy portable organ that I played through a Kustom bass amp. I knew an older guy who had a Wurlitzer electric piano and a MiniKorg 700 that I used to borrow.
I hated not having decent equipment as a kid. So when my son got into playing guitar when he was about 14 (he's 18 now), I got him cool stuff. He has a Jackson Randy Rhoads Edition Flying V (white with gold hardware and black trim), a beautiful Music Man guitar (John Petrucci Edition), a Fender Fat Strat (I think it has dual humbuckers), as well as a Marshall combo amp (for practice) and a Line 6 half-stack for shows.

I graduated HS in '89. At that time, I had Akai AX-60 ($600 used, I got ripped) & Alesis HR-16 ($400, new). I also used the Radio Shack disco mixer (2 line/phono with XFade & 3 mic inputs) and an Alesis MicroVerbII. My buddies had CZ-1000, TR-626, Boss Delay/Sampler pedal, MultiMoog. The next year I went straight to work and buying more gear: U-20, MMT-8, SH-2 (still have) TR-909, TR-808 (still have), Tascam 246 4 Track.
The advances in digital technology has made new gear more affordable and (most) older gear depreciates making it easier for the high schoolers to get decent gear these days.
