a year or so ago this forum was plagued with Ion VS MS2000 and Micron VS MicroKorg polls, Monk's comment was a joke. (though he really might not like either) but yes, they're all very capable synths.

By far, the Roland XP-10.

Now this thread was alive again, just a though...

The DX7 will be c**p, thin, bad, etc... but one of the most selling bands all over the world used it a lot: Depeche Mode. Look at any Hamburg 85 live video (youtube is plenty of), and watch ML Gore setup. It is true at that time were not much more new to choose, but in 1987 for recording Music for The Masses, in 1988 (Music For the Masses tour, 101 album etc), They played again a DX7 (IID or FD model). They never played a Roland D50, for instance. So my 10c for the DX not to the burn :D

I mean, I think a synth is not better or worse by its sound only. Maybe is better or worse for doing a good job that no other can do the same (The example about Tina Turner's Harmonica is a good one. I don't know another synth doing that sound so cool).

I can understand Poly800 votes, altought it can produce nice pads, so don't understand very much too.

And Not agree at all about the Roland D10. There are lots of sounds that fit 100% for FX, pads, etc. For instance, with a D10 it is possible to program exactly the sound for the Jean Michel Jarre's Chronology part 1.
Also it has very nice organ type sounds. Maybe the D10 is like a DX7, just a good edited sounds are needed.

Well, those were my 50 cent! :D

Edit: just an add: If DX7 is one of the worst synths ever made, why 160,000 population bought one=?. hehehe
Roland Promars, E-mu EMAX and some other machines...

mc 808 is worse because it's over 10x the price of a $75 303.

No sub $100 synth is THAT bad.

I just bought one, but I'll be using it mainly as a controller, and I kind of wanted some cheesy fm sounds too :o

Roland U-110, noisy, crappy interface, no filter. but some of the sounds are sweet.

Despite it being amongst my top 10 personal favorite synths.

I gotta admit, I haven't encountered a synth that I thought was as sonically limited as the TB-303....and for this reason, it gets my vote for worst synth ever.

I would go for the Vermona Tiracon 6v ,German synth from 80' made in the Communist part of Germany.Popular in Poland and east region,

You get a 4 octave keyboard ,1 dco with saw or square and the feet in the osc is 2'' 4'' and 8'' ...... You CANNOT GET A BASS SOUND it doesn't go to the lower notes and the lowest key is c2 actually.... wtf???

More ... there is 3 Lfo's !!!!!! .... with each one only having a sine waveform ...eeehhh??
3 ADBSRBAS something enveloppes working in the opposite way + is - etc.....

The keyboard have an autotune function because ... it goes out of tune after 10 min and after pressing it it's .... WORSE... :) you have to try and be lucky...

I haven't been able to produce ONE single good sound out of it ....

YES i thouht that it was broken so after a year i got a second one .... Guess what ......

I'd maybe go as far as to say the 808 is 10x more usable than the 303.

The Prophet-5 is one of the best synths ever when it comes to sounds. But when it comes to reliabillity it has to be one of the worst.

modern cheap synths are what you pay for :P

Post by elmosexwhistle » Thu Aug 02, 2007 2:56 pm

the old:

the dx9 looks pretty bad...i mean 4op fm is still quite useable, but coupled with the fact that the dx synths are a nightmare for many synthesists to program (im not one of em...however programming 6 different envelopes for each operator is kinda annoying sometimes ) and the keyboard isnt velocity sensitive! aghh!

the new:

the korg x50 and yamaha mm6 sound pretty bad...i mean, we sell em by the dozen in sound control but i guess thats coz of hype and the fact theyre cheap....£400 would get you alot more in the second hand market....build quality is cheap, there's nearly no editibility and the things sound plasticky and very aliased...

and since we've attacked two of the big 3 synth manufactures so far...lets finish on roland...lmao...i don't like the way the sh201 sounds...but i'm not gonna lay into it too much because, although other va's eclipse it somewhat, it's still got full editibility and some potential for experimentation....looks like you got away with it this time roland, and the new *juno's* are by far the best beginner boards at that price point...altho a couple of extra hundred ££ would get you an alesis fusion...hehe x
