Flame suit f**k'-ON!
First electronic keyboard: Yamaha PSS-680 in 1988.
Stole a CS-15 and rescued it from a life of neglect in 1991. Man, that thing has been on so many records, and I doubt that the university knows it's missing even now!

hmmm.
Guess I'm the old man around here, that sucks...
...I bought my first synth (on monthly payments with the help of my folks) in grade 9, in 1979...
It was a new Yamaha CS-5 and it was $700 CAN in Halifax, NS...not exactly the synth capital of the world.
Took me a year working part-time as a cleaner in the local fish-plant to pay it off...
The next year, I bought a YC-20 organ, which I stuck throught the EXT in with an Ibanex OD pedal.
I loved that little CS-5 more than any synth I've had synth....it's like a first love in a way...
Both were stolen from my apartment's storage area when I went on the road full time in 1986
By then I had a new DX-7 and a Juno-106. And in fact, that's how I got the gig...I wasn't a great player, but I had
the keys that made the "sounds" of the day...whatever chops I now have, came from years of painfully having to pick out
cover songs!! (so don't knock it)
Nearly 20 years later I found another CS-5 for sale locally, and I had to get it, for old times sake.
This pic is my dorm-room at DAL in 1983... gotta love curly cords!
I remember the DEC 1983 Keyboard Mag, reading about this new synth, the DX-7...that was going to replace every synth!
I bought one in 1984 for $2750!!!!(CAN)
Cheers

home-made mini moog
1977 or 1978. Ripped the guts out of my old suitcase organ and installed home-made mini-moog circuits. Thanks, Dad, for the schematic, Radio Snack for basic stuff, electronics store in Rome GA for the hard-to-find parts (RCA 3080 op-amp, etc.), and Delta Electronics for the scrap precision resistors.
Yamaha YPG-625, MO8, AN1x; Roland JP-8000, D-550, JD-990; Korg Legacy Collection; Guild D50, Epiphone Sheraton II, Homemade 8-string bass guitar

My stepfather had a DX7 while I was growing up, never really played it.
Bought a Wurlitzer organ in like October of 04 and used that until I bought the JX3p, which was the beginning of my downfall.

a used Roland D-50 back in 1990, along with an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer and a couple of Simmons SDS-1 pads. I played out less than 6 months later opening up for one of the local metal bands. Wish I still had those SDS-1's.....very cool swapping e-proms and cranking on the knobs for those crazy whoooooshing sounds...

I'd love to hear any old recordings of this.. curious. Seems self-indulgent in a beautiful way.astraeus000 wrote:a used Roland D-50 back in 1990, along with an Alesis MMT-8 sequencer and a couple of Simmons SDS-1 pads. 1996. Wandering Ventura Boulevard in Los Angeles and went into a guitar store that was closing (can't remember the name off hand). Was looking around to see if there were any deals on guitar pedals. Saw a keyboard crammed in sideways between a couple of boxes. Akai AX-60 for $300.00. Didn't really know anything about it. Never played a synth before. Took it home. It was all downhill from there.
It's funny, whenever I think about a new electric guitar, I get all nervous about throwing away money. I'll buy a new module or keyboard for two or three times what I would consider decent money for a guitar without raising a sweat.
