Non vintage synth with those vintage sounds for under $1500

Post by recordingsvault » Fri Jun 08, 2007 12:27 am

Simple question maybe naive but what's my best bet? I'm a classic rock fan want a nice Hammond, etc.

Buy a Midi controller and go software based?

Not a performing musician at this point but I want something that has the basics in case I have more time to do that.

Thanks!

ROCKON!

if it's primarily "real" keyboard sounds you want then i'd do that, or buy a synth module (roland makes some great ones) and a midi keybaord.

Nord Electro would be a good hardware solution, excellent Hammond and Rhodes/Wurly/Clav sounds plus a passable piano sound. It's mainly meant for performing musicians, though. If you mainly work in your studio, you might be better (and cheaper) off with a midi controller, NI B4 and some sample libraries (Scarabee for Rhodes, Ivory or similar for piano etc.).

Emu vintage pro is a nice module. Lots of classic sounds.

The nord electro is for sure the best bet for nice piano/organ sounds but if you want mellotron/ solina etc...you'll have to get something else....

I'd go the Emu route.

Why, oh why are they getting cheaper only in US?? In Europe they still are well over $1k in most shops...

Maybe they are selling well over there so they can get the high price for them? They didn't sell as well as Alesis wanted over here so there's plenty of them around. I think a lot of people decided not to keep theirs when Alesis basically said they weren't going to do any more development on it. That put tons of them on the market used which pushed the price down. Plus there's often sales and incentives put on the new ones that push the price down on teh used ones by association. I think Musicians Friend was selling the 6HD new for $499 at one point!

If you mainly looking for a hammond sound, you would want to look at something like a used Hammond XK-3 which could be had for under $1500 or opt for the upcoming XK-3c. but if you want some other sound along with a nice hammond look at a Roland VR-760.
