What is that little Roland thing? A sequencer perhaps?

Photo is from the Planet Rock era, early 1980's.

Looks like a CR-5000 or 8000.

Better question is: what the h**l is he wearing!?!?

Don't be dissing Bambaataa or the Zulu Nation! He's partially responsible for a genre I'm very fond of.

They totally ripped off Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express! "Searching for the Perfert Beat" is pretty cool tune, though.

I saw this guy at a hip hop awards show on MTV not long ago. He was basically larger than life, a character that is treated more like a god or King than a normal person. He wore ridiculous huge metallic coloured robes and a scepter in one hand. He was just sitting there listening to the artists, not budging and not smiling or talking. He just sat there and RULED. The hip hop community regard that guy as one of the founders of the genre, so he's like royalty. That and his "church" the Zulu nation did alot of work to bring the crips and bloods gangs to stop fighting and shooting eachother back in the early 80's.

You don't think I know this? That is why I said "partially".

Well, if it weren't for Afrika Bambaataa, i doubt Planet Rock would ever have been made, as it was he that decided to use sections of a few Kraftwerk records looped so that Soulsonic Force could rap on top of them, and rather than just sample it, he got Arthur Baker and John Robie to remake it. Thus was born a hundred thousand Miami Bass and Freestyle tunes. Kraftwerk were obviously popular, but Bambaataa took what they were doing, and twisted it into a Hip Hop form. Without that record, so many genres would have never happened. Even possibly the 808 wouldn't have the clout it carries today, including it's legacy in current rap music, which largely stems from that simple beat Planet Rock popularised. Electro is largely the result of that song. I could go on, i don't know if i've made it clear how important this guy is to popular electronic music.

True, and every interview I've ever read or heard with the man he is very respectful of Kraftwerk to the point of being a fan boy like many of us! He seems to bare no ill will towards them or the following lawsuits.

And it sure looks like a CR-8000 to me!
