I just bought a K2000S

Post by JBug » Sun Jun 24, 2007 4:31 am

I have been waiting a long time to get one of these in good shape. I saw this one at a used musical instrument store today and decided to buy it. It is in mint condition. It has 20mg of ram and everything works perfectly. I am extatic  :D

I paid $675 CAN (including taxes) for it. Not the greatest deal but i think it's a fair price.

Now, anyone has good links for this baby? I'll pick it up Monday and i want to make sure that i have the latest OS on it. Anyone can help me how to figure out where i can see this info? And were can i get the latest one? The Kurzweil site dosen't seem to offer it.

Thanks.

Start here:

http://www.sweetwater.com/k2000/home.html

The OS version will show on the screen during boot up. It's contained in a hardware chip though, which you'll need to replace if you want to upgrade.
They're getting a bit hard to find, and there's two different versions you need to be aware of. I'm sure you'll read all about it though.
Congrats.

Congratulations! The K2000s will keep you busy for a while ;).

The KurzList is an email forum devoted to the Kurzweil family of instruments. It is pretty much the best place for advice on anything K2000 related.
Join here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KurzList/

KurzSounds is the same as above but focused on programming and sharing sounds.

The Kurzweil Launch Pad is a great reference. Check here first before emailing questions to either email list.

As for the OS, _Do_Not_Get_Ripped_Off_ by someone on eBay. Both OS 3.87 Calvin and 3.87 Janis can be downloaded and burned onto appropriate EPROMs costing you less than $20. I'm told the eBay dudes do the same thing but charge you $99. Since Kurzweil has stopped supporting the K2000 series of synths it is not illegal for K2000 owners to distribute the OSes. Read directions carefully, depending on which OS is installed you could have a pretty easy install or a pretty complicated install.
All the details, plus where to download, Here: http://www.alzerom.com/K2000.htm

The Brian Cowell tutorials are a pretty good starting point, but I forgot where the archive is.
I couldn't find them, but this is similar: http://web.archive.org/web/200104060815 ... k2000.html

Use these resources and you will be well on your way to learning to control the K2000 :)

Thank you thank you thank you !

Those are very valuable information and links.

I agree that the K2000 will keep me busy for a while. I am looking forward to good become friends with this baby . . . It will take a while :D

One more question if you don't mind, i don't have the operating manual and the one on the Kurzweil site says it is for a K2000 but once downloaded, i realized that it is for a K2vx. Does it mean that it is for the K2000 basic OS or is it a different synth? Never heard ot the K2vx myself.

Thanks again.

Wow, you're lucky, I've wanted one for about a year now. Its the next thing to get on my list when I get some money coming in. You must of bought that one from songbird music! Lots of stuff you can do with it... possibly the best synth of the 90's? Have fun with it.

Yep, got is a songbird. I was biking by and decided to stop for fun . . .
I also think it is the best synth of the 90's and still beats a lot of synths from the '00 too!

I've had great luck with Sweetwater for even the most obscure parts (springs, keys, screws, etc.) and got my upgrades from them as well. Plus they have a ton of downloads for the K2000 series on the 'net.
