for me, a great 3 synth setup would look like this

Top
Moog Little Phatty
Middle
Roland JP8000
Bottom
Motif XS 8

The phatty would handle monophonic leads and bass sounds, and some FX
the JP-8000 would Do the VA / digital / danceish sounding pads and leads and melodic stuff
the Motif XS 8 would take care of the piano/EP/Organ/string/drum sounds, as well as act as my sampler and Vocoder
