there are no sounds in the stock 1080 that are not in the stock 1010. the 1010 has addtional sounds not in the 1080. the 1080 is WAY easier to ediit. the 1010 is half space and cheaper. some went with the 2080, 3080 and 5080. i never saw the benefits outwaying the cost.
the 1080 can take 4 addtional soundcards (the synthone is pretty cool) the 1010 can take 1.

The JV-1010 has a better piano and better sampled strings. That's because it has the "Session" expansion board built in and these sounds are stronger in Session than in the native JV/XP ROM (that they both share).
The JV-1010 must be edited via computer because most functions are unavailable from the unit itself. The JV-1080 is actually pretty easy to navigate from the front panel for a synth of this type. No multitimbral romplers are a piece of cake to use, but this one is better than most. It all makes sense after just a few hours if you know anything about setting up MIDI tracks.
They both have rhythm sets. You don't have to use them.

I've used a JV1080 for years and it's relatively simple to program from the front panel. I've got the session expansion card (some really nice sounds on this one), the bass/drum expansion (if you're looking for real-sounding electric basses, this is awesome), and the vintage synth expansion (not too useful given other synths in my rig).
Roland must've sold countless thousands of these things - for YEARS the price stayed at about $1,395 USD. All of these Roland JV romplers can be had a great, low prices on eBay. They're a great value for the money.

Go with the JV-1080, the expansion boards quickly become an addiction
1 slot isn't enough IMO
Also, it is much easier to edit...I can't see going to a computer everytime I want to change a simple parameter

XV soundset. Basically that's the JV/XP waveforms + additional ones, many from the Pop and Session SRJV boards.Villi wrote:Is there an reason to get the xv-2020 instead of the jv-1010? What are the improvements?
SRV reverb.
Drumkit that will let you layer two waves on each note for velocity crossfades.

the XV-2020 with the SRX piano and string board could be the coolest way to go.laserboy wrote:just looking for something with cool strings, pianos etc..

Something interesting I just found out at the Yahoo JV group is that the JV-1010, as well as the JV-2080, XP-60, XP-80 and XP-30 respond to MIDI cc#'s 71 (Resonance), 72 (Release Time), 73 (Attack Time), and 74 (Cutoff Frequency). However, the JV-1080 and XP-50 do not. These cc's apply across all tones of a patch.
This might be a consideration going against the JV-1080 for someone wanting to easily make live tweaks with a MIDI controller keyboard. (I was really happy when I found I could make these tweaks on my JV1010 using my Evolution MK361 keyboard.)

Great to on the controller codes Dano. This kind of thing drives you crazy with some manufacturers.
