An1x
I've just bought one! It hasn't arrived yet though.

But I have just received a Casio VL-1. It was just crying out to be plugged into my kaoss pad, and now I'm addicted :)

No. Just cheap and plasticky.

Could get some weird noises out of it with a software editor (no onboard FM editing here, only "easy edit"). Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Gonna throw mine out here as well. Yamaha pss-480. I believe most of the late Yamaha pss models have the same cpu's, so you all know what I'm talking about. Nice, simple fm synthesis, can get very bassy, brassy, belly, noisy, whiny, wowwy, etc...

The 480 has assignable -/+ button control for parameters. The sliders on other models look appealing, but for some reason, I like the buttons, seems a bit more low maintainance...

It seems that the presets each have their own characteristics too, slightly different envelope and form...

Nah, an AN1X can be had easily for £100-150 if you happen to be looking at the right times.

The only synths cheaper are JXs with some luck, some Casio CZs, a few Kawai Ks, a Poly61, an ESQ-1 and maybe a microKORG if you are really jammy. That's about it really.

They are pretty cheap here in the states, usually around $200 US or less (so about 99 GBP)

Edit: looks like Jumbo beat me to it!
.....i have some things that create and sculpt sound.
