Their ghost is still around haunting anyone that tries to create a recreation of the old oberheims, like VST's. Then they get slapped with a copyright lawsuit, and have to rename their synth to something like OP-X (instead of OB-X even though everything else looks the same).
That's the main reason why there are no official Oberheim softsynths made by Arturia etc. They are not allowed to use the name.

gibson similarly drove Opcode into the grave after acquiring it. goodbye Studio Vision... and they held onto the source for OMS, which was just disgraceful since they killed off a utility.
of course, the funny thing is that the OMS creator went right to Apple to develop the Core Audio component for OS X once the Opcode ship sank.

Gibson has killed more than it's share of brands after acquiring them. Makes you wonder why they bought them in the first place, it's one thing to bury your competition another to buy into a market where you have no presence yourself (MIDI, keys) and then let it just die.xpander wrote:gibson similarly drove Opcode into the grave after acquiring it. goodbye Studio Vision... and they held onto the source for OMS, which was just disgraceful since they killed off a utility.
Go check out musicYo where Gibson sells cheap imports branded with names they bought out years ago. They even were selling some Oberheim branded gear there a couple of years back.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

When I first found out about the OB12 and the OB3 organ products, a part of me began living in anticipation of what they'd do next. Later on, I ascertained that they'd quit building new gear under this early 2000's encarnation of Oberheim.
who knows? Let's cross fingers that Tom Oberheim will do a Moog and reclaim the rights to his own company name.

Lots of people bought it and still have it, I guess. It came with some horrible OS bugs regarding the effects section, but those were fixed in an OS update. It sounds NOTHING like the old oberheims, it is a pure virtual analog synth. But as a synth on its own I'm sure it is neat enough. Just don't compare it to an OB8 or something.
I've played it myself sometimes in stores. It wasn't super great, just okay VA sound.
