-six voice VCO versus 16 DCO on the 80 - so take that how you want -

- odd six octave keyboard

- does have the sample input that the AX-60 had that allows you to input Akai format samples for more processing, which I think the 80 lacks but meh on that.

- the 80 uses cem curtis chips
I recall hearing that the AX-73 is basically the same as the VX-90, which I own. While the AX-60 and AX-80 each have different characters. The AX-60 is closer to the VX-90 I own, but still different. They all have a similar character since there'll all Akai, but different still. That's the one thing I really like about the VX, it can be nasty. I've never heard a AX-73, but I'm pretty sure I heard it's like a VX-90.

I like watching Jexus's demos, he puts all that degradation and funky clips throughout his vids :D Makes for a nice viewing experience.

An alligator meets a tapir? Thats f-ing awesome!!! Gonna have to steal that one.

That guy has a ton of videos. His Arp Oddy one kicks a*s too. Where he got all those synths - sigh.

With all this talk about the AX80, I'm wondering if it should be my next synth acquisition. I am seriously in love with my AX60, so why not another Akai?

Goddamn it. Jexus has sold me on another one. I seem to love all the synths with a Curtis filter from that era.

Does anyone know how to go about replacing the knob and the screens. 2 of my screens are all fudged up and just show FULL bars.

I find it sounds NOTHING like the AX-60..

Was that the filter stepping at the 51 second mark?

I think he was changing the oscillators pitch in a very wide scale, so you got big stepping.

I took another look and thought I did see 'osc. 2', but it went by so fast I wasn't sure.

I was going to say that's the worst filter stepping I've ever heard.

Wow- I can't think of a part that might be harder to find than a screen from an 80 -

It seesm to me that it would be hard for on of those to burn out, maybe it is a problem in the associated circuitry and not the screen itself.

As far as replacements, it would probably be easier to just get another - though I hate to condemn vintage gear.

Anyone know where to download or buy a service manual for an AX80.
I just got one...for $100.... and one of the voices is out. It also has the famous problem with the right half of the buttons not working but that's an easy fix. The voice thing will be easy to fix too but I need to see the schematics and would love to get the calibration procedure so I can really get this thing set up.

well, being that this thread has been relived with a help question, I am going to add, I love my AX80 more and more every time I play with it. You know what is awesome, an AX80 combined with a Stage Echo, oh it's so angry heaven.

I am lacking a chorus effect, in fact, my stage echo is my only effects unit I have in all my rig ;) aside from a computer. Maybe somebody with an AX80 can share some demos with a warm chorus pedal/effect? I keep hearing rumors that the AX80+chorus pedal=the most winning synth combo evargh!@# I just want to know if it's true? :) Jexus?

That is osc2 pitch being adjusted with the crossmod on. It goes in intervals instead of smoothly.

I just got one fully fuctioning locally for $250. Just wanted to brag....

I love this synth, but I wish it had some sort of noise or random functions. I like making goofy, non-musical sounds too, but this synth really doesnt cover any of those.
so what do I put down here now?

hmm Huntsville, you didn't happen to get it from a listing on craigs list located in Dora?
I was disappointed to see it too late.
