Synths used by "The System"?

Post by hageir » Sat Dec 15, 2007 5:10 pm

that is one funky 80's band, Mic the Michael Jackson lookalike and David who bears a small resemblence to Jan Hammer

Does anybody know anything more about this band?
This song is pretty good (the bassline / bassynth is a killer :))

here you can see the Michael Jackson look, I was refferring to:
Elektron MnM & MD UW, DSI MEK & Prophet REV2 16 Voices baby!, Ensoniq VFX & ESQ-1, SE-1X, Korg MS-20mini, Polysix, SH-101 (red), 707, CR-8000, KPR-77, PO-12, Yamaha C1 Music Computer, Synare PS-1, FX, mixers, some more stuff..

What I read is that David Frank came up with the band name from how Oberheim was marketing their OB-Xa/8, DMX & DSX as "The System" which is what he used for the session work he did with bands before forming the group with Mic.

That is a PPG Waveterm monitor in the "You're In My System" video, but not sure what keyboard is. In "This Is For You" video, you see the Emu EII sampler and what looks like a Lync keytar controller.

I'm pretty sure MiniMoog was used anlong with the "Obie System" on the 1st album. You can hear their sound getting progressively "digital" over the next few albums with the addition of the PPG Wave & DX7.

Check out this scan from a 1988 Keyboard Magazine I posted in a thread earlier this year:

I never grow tired of hearing Frank's awesome synth bass lines.

I want that keyboard stand in the second video.

When I think of the five years I lived in the 80's this is what I think. Playing Nintendo and drinking Crystal Pepsi.
Stuff I own:
X Station
ESQ-1
JX-8P
Poly 800
MaxiKorg 800DV
Elka Rhapsody 610

I was going to comment on the jeans when I posted the pic :)

You should be able to get the ful size image from "Magazine Scans" folder my Photobucket: http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x30/zudio/

PPG Hoshi hooked me up with all of their albums when I sold him a D-550 a couple months ago. I could rip them to Mp3, but not sure how to get them to you.

The synth that is not boxed in the "Groove" vidoe is a Casio CZ-1000. The lighting is too dark in the apartment for me to make out what the other 'boards are. I bet one is a DX7.

crystal pepsi wasn't sold until the 90's. 92-93 I think. i used to buy it all the time at the grocery store I worked at.

I surprised that guy doesn't have a mullet. I think there was a mini decade between 86-96 almost. So much of the late 80's carried over through the 90's.

Cool!

Yeah, The System is really great.
I like their 2nd album 'X-Periment' the best.

Z, I'm still enjoying the D-550, it sounds really warm for digital.
I appreciate the great deal.

It's so funny how there is a Waveterm hooked up to some gigantic unknown synth keyboard in the "You Are In My System" video. I laugh every time David Frank types on the attached typing keyboard too.

Besides the Minimoog and Oberheim system (OB-Xa/DMX/DSX) The Systems debut album also featured the Memorymoog.
