I'm pretty sure it was the Prophet 5 doing the resonant filter bits and the CS80 doing the string pad.

Someone said it wasn't a delay used but an inverted-saw LFO modulating the filter. I don't think so. It was a delay. It was gated so that the delayed notes would stop when a new chord was struck. Just listen to the parts where a bunch of notes are being hit one after another. Delay all the way.

Think it was James at Synth Repair Services who told me they used an ARP Quadra, and James is not usually wrong about anything related to synths!

Here's me playing a bit of it on a Quadra. No effects except echo (it wouldn't really work without echo!)...

This is based on me listening to the track on Youtube, so I probably haven't got the sounds spot on. I find it very difficult to match (or recreate) sounds on any ARP synth because just touching a slider can sometimes change the sound quite significantly.

Anyway, I would say that the bass, chords and strings are all Quadra. Maybe next Christmas I'll play it on a Prophet for comparison.

this song is one of my TOP 3 Xmas tunes. Wonderful atmosphere - great synth. I always heard it was a P5. (prob in this thread each year for the past 5? years lol)

I still believe the Wonderful christmas riff was a CS-80, it just sounds like one to me. A Prophet 5 (rev 2) can be seen in the video but if you look
carefully you'll spot a CS-80 in there as well:
(@ 0:37-38, 1:01 and 2:46)

Anyway, I think you'll agree with me after seeing this video clip that it has to be a CS-80:

Moreover, the following studio shot from the actual recording sessions shows Paul with the CS-80 plus
a minimoog, ARP Pro Soloist and, in the background, a Jupiter 4 (which may have been used for the strings):
http://btw2worlds.com/wp-content/upload ... tudio.jpeg

And if that's not enough to convince you that it was a CS-80 have a look at this clip:
"The (Yamaha) CS-80 is a step ahead in keyboard control, and a generation behind in digital control" -- Dan Wyman, Jan 1979

Brilliant. Thanks Micke! Using the LFO explains why the pulse is sometimes a bit off on the record. What's the little white box on the CS80 preset panel? A sequencer?

Easily one of the most annoying and insipid songs ever recorded. What a waste of a CS-80, or P5 or whatever. What a ridiculous argument.

This argument reminds me of the rich old prick who can't decide between his Mercedes 600S or his Aston Martin Vantage to drive from his garage to his mailbox and back. Who cares! You could make that plinky sound with a toy piano and a Realistic echo delay.

(I wish I didn't feel the need to qualify this with IMHO. Of course it's my opinion. That's implied and understood going into it.)
