Blargh.
In some other (German) forum we have a simple game:
You try to stay 'in' as long as possible, and you lose (= are out) when you hear that song. Of course you have to be honest and admit it when you got whammed.
That song makes me turn off the radio in under a second, really ;) .
I finally lost last week. The supermarket was playing this ridiculous hyper-paced "MIDI-sounding" version. I was on the verge of cracking up the whole time.

It took surprisingly long this year, but I finally heard it today.

My opinion is that it's not a polysynth as such - the triggering just seems way too clean for the chords played.

I used to put my old Crumar string machine though my Odyssey's ext VCF input, hold a chord on the crumar and trigger the VCF/VCA manually on the ARP - It's sounds exactly the same.

Happy Wonderful Christmas Time!

My extremely worthless 2 cents to this thread:

When I got my Prophet 600--which, according to the eBay listing, had once been owned by or used by Roger O'Donnell (I forget), the (originally blank) patch sheet in the manual had a hand-written patch title for "Wonderful Christmas" that was, as you'd imagine, a dead ringer for the McCartney patch. So much so that, knowing he couldn't have used a P600, I always assumed McCartney had used the big-brother(ish) P5.

It's sad that this was the very first christmas song I had to hear in a store this year.

Well, there's a preset on the microkorg that sounds pretty close. So, here's my theory. Someone gave Paul McCartney a microkorg for Christmas (or will at some point in the future) and he absolutely loved it. So he spent the last bit of his fortune on building a time machine, went back to the late 1970's, and the rest is history. So...the reason he's having such a wonderful Christmas time is his microkorg. That's what the song is really about.

And that's what I told my kids is the True Meaning of Christmas.

Yes, it reminds us to go out and buy some gingerbread, or drink some mulled wine (blargh...).

And, of course, it reminds us to be gentle.

Never played this song before but just got word yesterday that a band I'm subbing with wants to do it at a Christmas event. I now have to come up with a reasonable facsimile of the sound probably using a Juno 60.
Prophet 5 rev.2, Pro-One, Juno 60, Jupiter 6, Matrix 12, OB8, MS20, Poly 800, CS70M, DX-7, CP35, Casio PX-5S, Hammond C3/M102, Vox Continental/Super Continental, Gibson G101, Farfisa Compact, RMI 300A, Pianet N, Combo Pianet, S770, S760, S50, NS3C

Actually I've never heard this song. They don't tend to play Paul McCartney songs during xmas in Norway.
