It's scientifically proven. I can post the equation if you'd like.

The synth is the only thing that makes this song not completely horrible. It's the awful "melody" of the vocals and insipid lyrics that makes the song so bad. It actually makes me depressed when I hear it.

It's just so barely a song at all. It's like Paul took a rough sketch of a bridge section for some other hypothetical piece and then decided to just do that over and over until he'd filled a minimum single length.

serious overthinking of a throw away feel good xmas pop ditty going on here.

The whole point of the song is the 'atmosphere' it creates. That high note (or those high notes) held throughout the entire song along with the extremely simplified music is what lends it a slightly 'magical' other worldly Xmas Eve feel - as if magic could happen. I'm sure anyone who sings along to it at Xmas or 'dares' to enjoy the song for what it is, hardly considers it as one of the greatest all round songs of all time.

And yes macca can be very cheesy, frog chorus anyone? But musical with it. The guy is a genius and writes from the heart, clearly, am extremely grateful some of the people in this thread were not responsible for providing us our Xmas classics for the past 4/5 decades - what a dreary, clinical over thought overly 'cool' set of non festive shite that would be!

Maybe it's a British thing (I'm British too) and if something touches us at the right time of year we can forgive it's cheesy/simplified nature for the atmosphere and images it conjures up, simple, human stuff, simple emotions, not as an example of the pinnacle of good songwriting.

It's still one of MY favourite xmas tracks purely because of the atmosphere and that I was born around the time it came out and recall hearing it a lot as a kid.

And imo the messed up timing where the fast chord changes clash with the bouncy LFO actually add to it's joyous charm... Christmas is hardly a time to be overly serious and analytic is it?

Merry Christmas

I don't think it has a Christmasy feel at all. In fact, I might actually like it if it was about Summer and the beach. I think that would be more fitting for the music.

I guess the problem here is that you live on the wrong side of the world. Over on the correct side Christmas IS about summer and the beach.

i gotta say, working retail this time of year and ive ordered my top 3 (retail friendly) xmas songs in a sort of john cusack 'high fidelity' sort of manner. in order to keep sane when each, and more despicable ones play 3x daily... so here goes...

1: greensleeves - any version
2: wonderful christmas time - wings
3: last christmas - wham...

Okay...I think if this is going to be perennially resurrected, whoever does said resurrection-ing should have to post their own cover of the song for all of us to critique. THAT would make it simply a wonderful Christmas time...
