What's the name of that new briefcase semi-modular?

Post by Postblank » Mon Feb 11, 2008 11:45 pm

Someone posted about a briefcase semi-modular that came out last year around the same time the XS and Prophet 08 were getting main billing for their pending releases. I was hoping someone could tell me the name of that real quick so I can bookmark it for future reference. Thanks.

Ya, the Matson Mini Modular went away real quick. I think they may have taken orders but I dont know if they went into production or not.

Seems like there is nothing going on on their forum either....

The Mattson Mini Modular is still around - there are some finishing touches being done to the physical design.

It's a very limited production run, not a massively produced synth. It might not be advertised in Keyboard Magazine or appearing at NAMM, but that's because it's just one guy putting them together.

It was cool working with it - it's actually quite a bit smaller than you'd think, particularly considering how many modules you can fit in the case.

It's fully modular by the way, not semi. No normalled patching at all.

I just hope they're still around in a year or two when I might have the disposable income to buy one. They look super cool, and the price didn't seem unreasonable to me, I just don't have $1500 I can spend right now.

I think when people looked harder at the MMM they saw it lacking things common in other modulars...only one VCO in the base system, no PWM, only one filter flavor, etc.

Having dealt with the limitations inherent in the PAiA and dotcom basic systems, I noticed similar limitations in the Mattson.

The thing that drives me crazy about modular base systems is that all of them are lack something and you're forced to choose what you're willing to give up.

I'm sure the MMM hype will resume once a few systems get into people's hands.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

The Vostok's already 6 years old or so.

Awesome, thanks guys. I need to work up some scratch, but I definitely want to own one of these with an extra two VCO modules and another one or two envelope generators. Thanks to Tomita, I have trouble envisioning a modular where I can't have oscillators triggering at once with drastically different ADSR speeds.

Don't forget the mattson has some unique capabilities. That one oscillator is capable of multiple simultaneous octaves. I had the pleasure of screwing around with it at its debut @ PNWSM, and it had lots of personality, though it was only a prototype.
