Buying rack ears cheap

So I just got a little old delay rack, but it didn't come with the ears. Thus I need to get some standard 1U ear mounts (the kind you screw in about 4 cm from the front of the unit). I haven't had any luck finding some online, so please direct me if you're in the know! Thanks!

here's a cheaper option, if you or someone you know can do metalwork, then you can make your own rack ears.

this thread reminds of this little high-blood-pressure thread of rage from last year. it still doesn't resolve your question outside of a DIY (or die) response. try the parts places that have prototyping stuff like Jameco, Digikey, etc- they pop out as the first places to turn for off-the-shelf parts.

There was a company called Middle Atlantic that sold "generic" 1 sp rack shelves with lots of pre-drilled holes back in the 90's. Not sure if that item or company still exists.

Boss also made a 1sp rack shelf that could house 2 of their half rack units.

I would search for these in the used market.

I've found lots of those shelves on a swedish music store chain's website. I don't think they ship anywhere, though. I think the website is just a front for the physical store.

But thank you for pointing out what I was going to point out again. Fabricating something as simple as rack ears is really, really easy. Honest! You never know til you try and if you succeed, it opens up lots of potential for solving similar problems without having to spend lots of cash. You don't need to be a master metalworker, I know I'm not.

If you have never wandered around a hardware store looking for solutions to things then it's possible you just don't know that you can buy lengths of L shaped aluminum in various sizes. The stuff is cheap and you can make dozens of sets of rack ears out of a single piece. Aluminum is a really soft metal so it's easy to saw through and drill through. You may also not know that you can get screws in just about any size and thread at a good, small hardware store. Bring in the thing you are trying to fit them to and try them out to make sure you get the right stuff.

I guess I am trying to make people want to do something some of them clearly don't want to do. I realize this, but I know how many ideas doing something this simple gave me for solving problems when I first tried it and you can save a ton of money, too. It really is worth trying to do.

you should post some pictures- i think a lot of people would be interested to see the process and particularly how the finished product looks.
