my dx21 is that very dark brown -- rather ugly. but no one can tell in the dark. or listening to it. and the keys have a dash of a pink hue to them. i haven't seen that mentioned yet in this thread...

Yes.
He is Roger O'Donnel (ex-Tompson Twins, Psichedelic furs, and The Cure). He doesn't like the brown case :)

Yamaha bought the rights to the FM computer program already back in 1969 from dr. Chowning (who had been experimenting with "mashing" waveforms together for years already, and made a HUGE book on all the hardcore theory), and they had a team working on it through the 70's on how to turn that program and knowledge into a fully fledged synthesizer.

This is from the foreword in my The Classic DX7 book.

So maybe the brown colour is a tribute to their hard work over a decade.
Time well spent too, since it became Yamaha's best selling synth ever.
