Kurzweil K2600
Hi there all!
I have to option to purchse a Kurzweil K2600 for about $1,700 (used but excellent condition). I always wanted a Kurzweil but I'm not so sure if it's a reasonnable price or not.
Please let me know what you think.
Best regards

Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran has used a K2600 live and in the studio for at least the last five years. That should be enough of an implicit endorsement for the device's versatility and reliability.

Hi Ron,
Thanks for your comment. Actually I was more wondering about the price tag then the actual unit. I have someone else telling me this is expensive.
This unit is still selling for like $4g new and I haven't seen any under $2,500. I thought I should ask here, there seems to be many knowledgeable people on this forum.
Regards,
DG

The K2661 apears to be a light-weighted version of the K2600. It's about 3/4 cheaper with 61 notes, which doesn't cut it for me.
Also I think the K2661 has less connectivity with the outside word (no hard drive, 6 analog output vs 10) and only allows output at 48 kHz.
But it's a faster machine with less metal in it. It's bascially the same thing with less notes. I can see why this unit could be appealing to certain user.
Thanks

I'm surprised this has not been put in the Buyer's Guide yet, ask if it has any of the ROM exspansion boards installed, and the sampling board added, you can still load sample format's even without it and you can do whatever you want to a sample, just like it was an internal waveform, the K2600 has more addtional output's for processing than the K2661,and can also be fitted with a internal hardrive, for $1600 that a good deal you can cover alot of ground with a 2600 and you won't have to look at any other Rompler's after although the 2600's internal waveform's are pretty lame with a lot of ailising, but you have a wealth of sample libraries avalible.

Kurzweil's used to be priced pretty high.
Then the company had some financial trouble, changed hands a few times, and didn't release any new products for quite a while.
During that time, the prices dropped dramatically.
Now the company is trying to get back on more stable ground, has a new product coming out, and the K series is being sold for higher prices again.
Anyways - bottom line is, I think it's a fine board and $1700 is a reasonable price for it.

I don't know how close the Kurzweil PC88 and the K2600 are, but the local used music shop just sold a PC88 for $1000 plus tax in very good condition. Also, I just bought a Kurzweil K2500 rack mount for $250 dollars, and while the K2500 and the K2600 are a bit different, they do have a lot in common. I've never had the chance to play a Kurzweil K2600, but if the K2500 is anything to compare, it ought to be a very fine instrument. Frankly, I've always loved Kurzweil and I think they have a lot of unique features that the other manufactures are only just now starting to emulate.

they're just releasing a PC3 which is closer to the K2600, minus the sampler function, but with a more advanced synth engine and the VA-1 board feature. funny that it's bearing that PC name (which is more of their "Performance Controller" line) for their most advanced synth.Analog Freak wrote:I don't know how close the Kurzweil PC88 and the K2600 are

Is it purple or black? the black model being the later unit's, came with the string and contemporary ROM boards pre installed.Don't give up to early on the K2600, there's alot to explore there it doesn't give you instant gratification but it has more synthesis power than most other rompler's,I used to own a K2500XS,the guy i bought it from wanted to upgrade to the 2600,(which at the time was new) so i got a really good deal price wise,he also basicaly gave me some Kurzweil 101,because without it i would have wound up selling it,which i did eventually praticing for hour's on those old fatar key's wear them out quicker than you would think.

My $.02
The following would determine how much I would pay for a K2600...
Orchestral ROM installed?
Contemporary ROM installed?
How much sample RAM is installed?
Does it had an internal hard drive?
Does it include the sample option?
I've seen K2600 racks going for $1100 - $1500 depending on the above so $1700 for the keyboard version may be a decent price if it has any of the options installed. In the end though it comes down to what it's worth to you.
