oboe sound on "everything counts" ?

Post by 8bit9bot » Thu Apr 24, 2008 7:01 pm

aside from the fact that this video is horrible - i always wondered how they made the synthetic oboe-type sound in this song... i've tried to get similar sounds with pulse width, hardsync, ppg/waldorf wavetables, and using yamaha FM synths - if its the synclavier then it may only be recreatable with the synclavier unfortunately

ps - i dont think its PCM

The "Shawm" is most likely the Synclavier as stated in this Wiki article:

EDIT: After listing to the music in the video, I noticed a trill at the beginning of some phrases, which could be the result of mutli-sampling or playing the actual instrument - imagine that!

.

The "Oboe" setting on my CASIO MT-70 nails that sound; I play the song's two-note lead line ("raaaaar-rar" . . . "rar-raaaaar") through a phaser and delay for added track-matching texture.

:)

While they did use both the Synclavier II and Emulator on CTA, I think it's a real shawm (the loud sounding predecessor of the modern Oboe) on "Everything Counts". Also, Gore performs the Melodica part on this song.

wow its real? no wonder why no synth could do it haha - i didnt know martin gore played wind instruments... not that its a very intricate line

now the question is... how did they make the similar sound which is in blasphemous rumors? maybe the same way... i dunno

I thought it sounded to clean to be sampled, especailly with the trills.

That sound sounds sampled to me. Very 12 bit.

Altought I have understood it was a real instrument (at least for original version), I checked that a DX7 can achieve that sound.

There is a preset on cartridge called Oboe that match it quite well.
Roland Promars, E-mu EMAX and some other machines...

The mizmar preset on the E-mu EIIIX CD "World Instruments" (Volume 5) sound very close with a little editing.

*Edit*: sorry, the MIDJWIZ sample, not the mizmar sample. Adding mod wheel vibrato helps conceal the loop.
