check out synthzone.com if you have not already. There you can find a database for older synths with FREE patches and editors. I must worn you some links are dead but if you dig you can find some gold.

I have no experience with SY/TGs, but as far as DXs go, I'd recommend a DX7 Mk. II on cost, availability, and size (the DX5 is huge); and although the '5 has the best interface of any of the DXes I've played, it and the Mk. II are (almost) identical otherwise. Both have more informative, backlit displays, better converters and increased patch memory over the original DX7, both can do layers/splits, both have performance memories, etc.

It's amazing how cheap the TX802 can be gotten, it's powerful, sounds great and has individual outs. It's the rack version of the 7ii with a few more features.
If you want unweildy, but raw, power- there's always the TX816.

Man, I have always wanted a TX816 but I have never seen one for sale, only single TF modules. Although I think it may be cheaper to get 8 TX7 modules - or more

What is the aftertouch like on the DX7 MkII FD? I'm leaning towards the keyboard version, which may later control the microKorg or MS 2000r.

You know the II still hasn't solved the issue with the velocity not going over 100? This is something you probably want to consider when programming patches.

Other than that, it's a really really nice keyboard; aftertouch is not as smooth to trigger as on an AN1x, though, so you have to push a bit.

Are there any drum patches that can be loaded into the DX synths so I can avoid buying another drum machine? I haven't seen any so far in my travels around the 'net.....

The DX synths have nothing at all to do with drums, unless you painstakingly program a patch that does 2 or 3 of 'm, and it's still going to sound like c**p.

If you want to avoid buying another drum machine, sample your existing ones, sell them, and buy an Akai MPC.

out of curiosity.. which of the DX's have decent/free editors or vst frontends that scenesters have made? Obviously the DX7 has alot and a ton of VSTs support importing/exporting DX7 patches, but is there a DX7 front end VST that someone has released? What about the TXs?

The DX9 was one of my first synths many many years ago and I've still got it. Love it's sound, but one of it's biggest problem is no decent editor exists for it. Theres a couple u can run in an Emu (atari) but they're c**p.
I'd like to get rid of my DX9 but pick up a TX to replace it (12bit output ftw). I want something editor friendly though with as many resources out there as possible. Otherwise I'll just ditch it and stick with FM7.

This is true, they are disappointing. I was just last night going through an old box of floppy disks and found one that i had forgotten about. a few years ago I bought the DX-21 soundset from Kid Nepro but didn't have a clue how to get the sounds to my synth. I gave up after a while and put the disk away.

So anyway, after I found it last night, I loaded up the sounds and was very disappointed. They are not really that much better than the presets. No clarity, no bottom end or anything. No zip! Just blah like Corn Flakes! I have found much better sounds just poking around the internet.

My suggestion to these companies is to have sound samples from their various offerings so we can see if they are worth the money or not before hand. (some of them do) Then again, maybe they know their sounds are not that great and wouldn't be inclined to do that. I do understand that a lowly DX 21/100/27 synth is not even on their list of priorities but still they should have a quality product for the lower end synths. Not all of us have the $$$$ for the big 1, 2 and $3000 pro synths!
