Synths That Never Were.

Post by tim gueguen » Fri May 02, 2008 1:41 am

The idea for this topic came from a 1985 issue of Keyboard magazine. It was their keyboards in Japan issue and included an interview with Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra. When asked what he was using at the time he stated one of his main pieces of gear was a Minotaur 1 synthesizer. The Keyboard guys didn't know what it was and speculated it was some instrument not yet sold abroad. Over the years I asked once or twice on Usenet if anyone knew what it was, but no one did.

But last year I came across this video.
Hosono had composed music for several video games and it was released on LP, hence the promo vid. Seeing the Emulator I I had a revelation. There was no Minotaur 1. It was a mistranslation or transcription error, and of course what Hosono actually said was that an Emulator I was one of his main pieces of gear in 1985.

So, does anyone know of other synths that literally never existed? Even such blink and you missed them instruments like the Con Brio ADS and Technos Axcel actually had examples produced.

(FYI Yellow Magic Orchestra were amongst the earliest users of the Emulator I live, the instrument being used for their Winter Live gigs of late '81.)

The McLeyvier might fall into this category - a Canadian polyanalog synth prototyped in the trendy Yorkville area of Toronto, just before the DX-7 arrived.

See my previous post about the S.W.A.N.

it was a one off keyboard version of the Syntar which there are only a handful of examples. Although the circuits of these now live on in the Mattson mini Modular...

Hoaxes are certainly relevant.

Akai put out an ad for the AX90. Sort of an AX80 with VCOs and a few extras. Never made it past the ad stage. Rumors of a prototype/mockup have floated around for years.

I recall hearing something about an Emulator III hoax that caused lots of people to cancel orders for the Emulator II. I think an Emulator III eventually was released, but at the time, there was no intention of releasing a new Emulator model. I don't remember where I read this. Someone mind checking this? Correct me if I'm totally wrong.

Not in hardware at least. It's software was rolled into the new PC3.
