If you had to choose THREE synths...
What would they be?
However, you can only spend up to a total of $5000. You may not spend more than half of that amount on any one single synth, and one synth must be freely available on the open market for less that one fifth of the total amount you are able to spend. If the synth is currently available new from dealers you must use the new price, second-hand prices are acceptable for synths that have been discontinued.
To make things a bit more interesting one synth has to be pre-1990, one synth has to be fully digital and one has to have a blend of both analogue and digital (DCOs do not in this case count as a digital element). One synth may fulfill all these parameters, but not if it's the one that is available for less than one fifth of your total amount unless it's monophonic. It will however be difficult to find a synth that's both fully digital and a digital/analogue hybrid.
Please also show the cost of each synth. Bonus points will be given if your total amount is a prime number.
Mine would be:
V-Synth ($999)
Evolver Keyboard ($1199)
MS-20 ($1979)
Total = $4177
What would you choose?

Analog Polysynth - Roland JX-10 & PG-800 - $600
Analog Monosynth - Moog LP II - $1250
Modern Workstation - Roland Fantom G6 - $2495
Total: $4345.00
That covers the bases nicely. The Fantom gives me a sequencer, sampling, rhythm and audio recording as well as acoustic patches.
Alternatively...
Analog Polysynth - DSI Prophet 08 - $2000
Analog Monosynth - Moog LP II - $1250
Modern Workstation - Roland Fantom X6 (Used) - $1100

Trying to stick to the rules:
Pre 1980: Multimoog, 1300$ (wild guess)
Hybrid: Sequential Prophet VS, 1500$ (wild guess)
Digital: Roland JD-800, >1000$
On budget, but with abstinens for more analogues.

In Italy I can find MS20 at 800-1000 € (1250-1550$) but Jupiter8 no less than 3000 € (4650$) ..
ok let's play this game (but in real-life I don't buy something new 8) )
5000 $ -----> 3225 €
Mono Evolver Keyboard --- 1200 €
Juno 60 -- -------------------- 500 €
Nord Wave ------------------ 2000 € ............ ops ! Bankrupt
Buying Nord wave used is the only solution

But you need an analogue/digital hybrid.Z wrote:I would choose my 3 main synths:
Synth Current Value What I Paid
Roland Jupiter 6 $1500 $500 mid 90's
Roland JD-800 $500 $1000 early 90's
Roland Fantom X6 $1200 $1600 2007
Need the JP-6 for analog goodness, JD-800 for digital goodenss and X6 for ROMpling.

OK, PPG Wave 2.3 instead of the X6 then. Once my tech has mine finished, I will have spent around $2500 on it.Stab Frenzy wrote:But you need an analogue/digital hybrid.Z wrote:I would choose my 3 main synths:

Moog LP II - VCOs
Roland Fantom G6 - Digital
... And I'd use the remaining $650 to spring for a Yamaha YC-20 organ in near pristine condition.

Beyond what I've already got, I'd take the Yamaha Motif XS8 (w/ a couple of expansion boards), the DSI P08 Tabletop and an Opus 3 - if you can get them for less than 5 grand.
Give me another $5,000 dollar budget, and I'll have a Hammond XK3 to upgrade the Opus.
