Is it me or does the microkorg SOUND better then the R3??

Just messing around with both side by side in the store the other day and it really seemed that the microkorg actually sounded better...I own an R3 and I like it and it's certainly much better on paper but it just seemed to me that the microkorg had a more raw sound just comparing raw oscillators and filters it seemed the microkorg had meaner osc and stronger filters

Of course sound is very much subjective but I was wondering if anyone else has done a side by side and found the same results

I prefer the microKORG's sound as well. The RADIAS sounds great, but the R3 not so much; it's as if the R3 is a RADIAS stripped of all its best sounds and features -- the ones that distinguish it from the MS2000 and microKORG series in the first place!

I originally got an R3 to replace an MS2K (same sound engine as MicroKorg).

I was disapointed with the R3's overall timbre as well. I just couldn't get the same kind of beef that I did from my MS2K, regardless of how I programmed it. The filter adds kind of a nasty "glassy" sheen to everything it touches. The Radias seems to have this as well.

I sold my R3 less than a month after getting it...made me wish I hadn't let go of the MS2K.

Yea, thats pretty much the same conclusion I came to, The R3 is an amazing synth with a ton of features and a first class vocoder but the over all sound is just not what I'm looking for.

I have to EQ the h**l out of it to get just a raw buzzy sawtooth or fat a*s square that I love. I'm going to sell it for sure and maybe buy a microkorg or if I can come up with the extra cash I'll pick up a virus B rack.

I'm making a mental note to never audition the MicroKorg or MS2000 because I love the sound of my R3 and don't want to risk ruining that.

There's been a lot of discussion on this over at the Korg forums under "Radias vs. Virus". Have a search and you will see what I mean. As a summary, people there feel the Virus is better at leads/"in your face" whereas the Radias is better at filling out a mix. The MicroKorg is also good with that dirty sound as you mention, whereas the R3 is cleaner. I like the MicroKorg and the Virus both, but if you are only getting one you should probably get the Virus. It'll take a long time until you get bored of it. Not sure about a vocoder on the B but otherwise it's probably not much of a contest.

For some reason, I've never truly been interested in the R3. Something about having that fifth edit knob puts the microKORG ahead in my book.

The Microkorg is really nice.. it's the tiny keys that make it useless for me.

The front mic and the colors also make me prefer the R3.

The R3 has the low-aliasing oscillators of the Oasis (for its analog style oscillators) so they probably do sound quite a bit different than those on the MicroKorg.

A nice feature that came through intact from the Radias is the formant motion memory where you can record 7.5 second vocoded phrases and store them in memory. IMO the presets show off some pretty cool possibilities for that feature...some that don't even use a voice as a modulator.

Really? An additional edit knob is the tipping point in this all-important battle of small synths?
