You don't actually have to do this - far better would be to simply scan as high-resolution (300dpi) high quality (90%) JPG files and then upload 'm somewhere in a zipped file.

It's then trivial for anyone else with the time (for instance, me) to OCR the text from those jpg files, cut out the illustrations, and put the entire thing up as a big HTML file with a table of contents and next/previous buttons. Then that can be used to create a PDF again (but the only advantage is having the option to search through it).

True, that´s a better option... =D>

With all this fuss about this book going on I thought I'd pick a copy up - my DX7 has hardly been programmed (with good reason - I suck at it) and this book may be able to change that I hope. At a glance it looks like less of a dry read as you probably expect and one would hope all the hands on exercises should really make a difference.

Maybe it's a good idea to contact Mr. Massey before anyone scans his book and sticks it online for the world to see? Although even with his approval there is a small chance the publisher could kick up a stir, even if it seems they'd be unlikely to ever find out or even care.

On the other hand my book came with 3 plastic records (the soundsheets for the exercises in the books). I realise that many may have the book, but not the audio examples and I think it might be an idea for me to contact Mr. Massey and ask if it's okay to bring these into the digital domain for anyone who wasn't fortunate enough to receive these with the book.

Only problem is the record player I have is pretty crappy so the quality will probably suffer, but if anyone is interested just give us a shout.

I can do this no problem--as long as Mr. Massey is OK with it :D

Just don't skimp on the theory and go straight for the exercises, then you've no idea what you're actually doing.

I wonder what's on those LPs, I have them but no LP player. Is it just a single sound example from each of the exercises? Or full songs?

I'm guessing they are just sound examples of what the exercises are supposed to sound like so that you know you are doing them right.

But it's really hard to not do them right since every keypress is listed in the examples :) But I guess it would be a reference for other FM synths that don't have the exact same parameters, dunno.

Guess it can be funny if it contains little snippets played with each sound.

Amazon.com didn't want to send me anything. Amazon.co.uk did have a used one listed and wanted to send it to me, for a trivial difference in price. When it arrives I'm going to work on it. gcoudert, if you start from the first pages, I'll start from the back ;).

Contacting mr. Massey would probably be a good idea, but I wouldn't know where to start with playing the internet detective.

I did have a little look into that a few days ago - searching for literary agents... didn't get any where.

However, I would have thought that he might be known to writers/journalists of the Soundonsound Futuremusic type.

Specialist magazine journalists and writers always seem to know each other...

+1 on the soundsheet recordings, if Mr. Massey is ok with it.

If this project gets off the ground, it'll be awesome. If not, I guess I'll just have to track down the book. We have a DX7 in the house, but I really don't know the first thing about FM synthesis.
