Earliest Minimoog recordings

Post by Micke » Fri Aug 22, 2008 7:48 pm

Here's a list of the earliest Minimoog recordings I know of

Listed in order of recording date

Minimoog model B prototype
summer/fall 1970 - Sun RA - My Brother The Wind vol.1 & vol.II, The Night Of The Purple Moon

Minimoog model A prototype
1971 - David Borden/Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company - The Mini A provided
the lead line on the track "Music".

In April 1970 MMPM performed the piece "Easter" live using the minimoog prototype A,
that's the first ever use of a Minimoog in public.

Minimoog model D (RA Moog & Musonics Moog)
June 1971 - Don Preston/The Mothers (Frank Zappa) - Filmore East (Live)
Aug/sep 1971 - Rick Wakeman/YES - Fragile
Late 1971 - Manfred Mann's Earth band - self-titled debut album
Jan 1972 - Keith Emerson/ELP - Trilogy (Musonics minimoog)
Jan 1972 - Flavio Premoli/PFM - Storia Di Un Minuto (RA Moog)

If anyone knows of any other early (pre-'73) recordings that features the Minimoog please add them to the above list.

cheers,
Micke

Wasn't there an early version of the mini Moog on Abbey Rd. by the Beatles? I thought I read that somewhere...

I know Linda McCartney played one and was fond of the mini Moog.

She does a nice lead on Band On The Run circa 1972 (I think).

The Beatles did use a Moog for abbey road

It's not really specified weather it's the Minimoog or the modular however.

Abby Road released: 1969

Model D introduced: 1970

I've always assumed George Harrison/the Beatles used a custom made modular system.

Not to mention, the Monkees beat them to it (by a couple of years) on Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.(1967). But again, that's a modular not a Mini.

I think it was a Moog modular that Bernie Krause sold to George Harrison when he and Paul Beaver were Moog reps. Bernie's autobiography In A Wild Sanctuary includes the story. Somewhat humorous, and not very flattering to Harrison. Since he's passed, unfortunately we'll never know the full story.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra's 2nd album 'Birds Of Fire' has minimoog. It was recorded in August 1972.

Mike Pinder of The Moody Blues says he received Minimoog serial numbers 002 and 003. According to Mike, Stevie Wonder received 001. Pinder first used his Minimoogs on The Moody Blues' "A Question of Balance" from 1970. He also had one of the first modular Moogs in England which was first used on their 1968 "In Search of the Lost Chord" recording. It was also used on "On the Threshold of a Dream" and "To Our Children's Children's Children" both from 1969.
