I always felt that the JX-3P had a more ''metalic' timbre to the 8P. The 8P certainly sounds quiet different to my ears. The 3P definatly had its own charicter, one i find very hard to emulate.

Yep, we've even had a "competition" between JX8P users about who could recreate the final countdown brass sound the closest. Thread is most likely long gone by now. You see the JX8P in the video for the song on stage.

Not too hard, just remove dynamics and add reverb.

That's the easy part... next add a TX816 with a brass patch. ;)
Two VCO: thanks to the push rods, one can choose several forms of waves at the same time!

Yeah The Cure used the JX frequently in the mid/late 80's. They used a 3P from 1984 onwards too.

I replied 'superman' and just about hit submit, and then I heard Vader's breath :evil5:

I really don't miss my JX8P all that much but I certainly used it a lot during '03 when I bought it to sit beside my DX7 (this was when I was really learning about synthesis). The problem for me was not the DCO vs. VCO c**p, it was that without the PG-800 it's really a headache to operate. I did have this one piece of software I downloaded (can't remember where) but it was like a virtual PG-800 programmer and also allowed you to import/export patch data. Nice idea, but only useful if you're tethered to the computer while using the synth, which I usually wasn't unless I had to be.

Overall the JX had a great sound; I even liked the first stock piano preset! But when I got my OB8 I parted ways with it because it was somewhat redundant, and I knew I'd probably never play it. Towards the end it pretty much served as a midi controller. I don't know how much they're going for now but I got mine under $200 then (mine was a beater but worked perfectly) and I'd certainly say it's a worthy and powerful sounding synth. The synth bass patches were also pretty flavorful.
I like vintage synths....
