The gear I've had during the years...

Post by kraku » Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:08 pm

I just started thinking how much money I've put into this hobby during the years. I first thought "well, there aren't many synths/gear I've had which I've sold during the years, so I can justify all the negative cash flow...".

Then I decided to list all the gear I've ever had and I felt horrified. That's alot of gear! I only own a small part of that listed gear today and I must have spent a fortune on all that gear during the last 10 years or so. No wonder I've always been dead broke. I don't even dare do the actual math anymore.

I'll write my "the gear I've had during the years" list here and I'd like to see your lists also and hear your thoughts was it really worth the money? The bold text is the gear I still have lying around.

Some good gear, but - pah, that's nothing  . I've currently got at least 70 bits of gear, not including the - erm - four computers and some spare interfaces/midi keys/mixers/bricabrac/acoustic instruments - and have sold, what, maybe a dozen things. And I'm nowhere near the top league of what some here have had.

I know what you're saying though. I no longer even care about the amount I've spent. I've got great stuff, that's why I spent it. I'm starting to trim around the edges a little, but I do like having loads of stuff.

The thing that I get frightened about is how much a person can spend on cable and jacks...

Monitoring:
Alesis Monitor One Mk II Passive

Here's some things I've learned:

- without decent monitors, things suck. The 6D had to be fixed, twice :( Works like a charm now, though.
- virtual analogs are a lot of fun to collect
- vintage lower-end Rolands are also fun to collect
- it's not worth your effort and time to buy an audio interface that sucks. Don't be a luddite, get something good that's supported properly.
- hardware samplers aren't worth my time, unless they're in an attractive package or have a wonderful character
- Komplete was a really good idea and allows me to sketch out ideas quickly, and Massive is amazing.
- a good rompler is a good idea - just something you can sit down with and practice with that has a quality keyboard. Next step: digital piano.
- hooking all this c**p up from zero takes a full day
- DIY furniture, when done right, fits like a glove.
- buy quality A- or X-stands.
- make sketches of how you plan to use it
- invest time to learn how a patchbay works
- invest time to learn how insert/send effects work
- learn how to part with gear you don't use (this was hard for me)
- if anything impedes your workflow, get rid of it
- less = more is not about quantity, it's about focus.

i know the feeling, i feel the only way i can tell if i like a unit is to own it for a while....how am i going to tell if trying something out for 30min at guitar center is going to make me want something....id rather own it for a while and dig deep, see how i feel, then if it doesnt work out, get rid of it

damn I feel good about the LACK of gear I've owned *LoL*
anyhow, I'm to lazy to list an entire list, so I'll just hit on the more synth-centric things

ALESIS:
QS6
Fusion 6HD

EMU:
CS\P2500

FUTURE-RETRO:
777
XS

IBANEZ/ROLAND:
Ibanez X-ING IMG2010

KORG:
MS-10
ER1-MKII

MFB:
Synth II

NOVATION:
Supernova II Pro X

ROLAND:
TB-303
Juno 106
Alpha Juno 1
TR-707
MC-303
MC-505
MC-09
V-Synth GT

WAYFAR:
MIDINES

YAMAHA:
SU-700
FS1R

There were a number of things I had stolen a number of years ago, and had that incident not occurred, I'm not all that certain that, of all things, the QS6 would have ever left. Same goes for the Ibanez. I do wish I would have kept the MS-10 now.
But in the overall, I've never really been big on buying gear, trying it out, and then swapping it out. Typically when I settled on something, something or other had occurred that locked me in on that piece (in essence, I've ended up working extensively with much more than I've actually owned).
Due to the same theft incident, there were a number of pieces that were actually BOUGHT AGAIN. And a few pieces exist in multiples currently.

Looking at your comments now, I'm glad I decided to make a spreadsheet of all my gear + spent/sold amounts and repair costs. Discounting a few things I've had forever, everything goes on there (short of small things like cables and necessary bits)... I basically try and keep it at a certain amount which I feel is fair to spend on this particular hobby... if I start dramatically going over that, I start thinking about selling, etc... I will probably always be in the red, but I try to be a shrewd enough buyer that I can usually get back about what I spent, if not more (not always of course)...

I find having that (somewhat arbitrary) "number" right there really puts things into perspective... at the end of the day, even if I can afford that next purchase without needing to sell something, inner-guilt usually trumps all!
Do you even post on vse bro?

Re: The gear I've had during the years...

h**l yes, it was worth the money. It's been a hobby of mine for over 20 years. I don't have any other expensive hobbies or activities, so this is it. I've bought/sold things for a variety of reasons, but primarily because I've never lived in any decent markets where I could try out synths to see if they met my needs (outside of what local GCs had on the floor), so buying/selling is just part of it. Also, I was 13, I believe, when I got my first synth, so I wound up buying most of the older pieces once I got out of college because I didn't have the means to buy them when they came out. The current stuff is in my gear list underneath the avatar.
