an XS-ready analog fx unit w/ CV-ins would be most interesting.lhm1138 wrote:A CP251 type unit with extra LFO that reaches audio range would be welcome. Slap a Bucket Brigade Device in there with CV and Clock for delay/flange/karplus-strong. I'd buy that for $550.
doesn't the CP-251 LFO go into audio speeds by itself? I've only used mine w/ a CV pedal driving the attenuator/amp and it goes waaay into stratosfear - seems to be at least many hundreds of Hz.
what is the 'audio range' threshold anyway - 20 Hz for most folks right ???

Yeah, 20hz for most. The XS lfo can't quite get there. I believe it tops out around 18hz. And no LFO in for modulating it, so you can't trick it into doing it. Something along the lines of a CP251 would really nullify a lot of the limiations of the XS.shaft9000 wrote:an XS-ready analog fx unit w/ CV-ins would be most interesting.lhm1138 wrote:A CP251 type unit with extra LFO that reaches audio range would be welcome. So bakeded, you've had a few days to play with the Orb. When you have some time, would you care to post some comments about it? I'm very curious about this thing. I've never played with any FR product so I have little idea about what to expect, but everything I've read and the other opinions around here re: the Revolution, 777, etc seem to imply that they produce really good stuff.bakeded wrote:Yeah boy!
The Orb looks like a lot of fun, and I like that it's compact.
Cheers! 8)

Bakeded... you're not helping my GAS for this combo... it just seems like the perfect combo for someone who likes 303 type sequencers, wants a synth that is more substantial than a 303, and wants a nice analog synth with no keys that's new.

Shouldn't there be two orbs in your dual XS set-up?bakeded wrote:![]()

I gotta stand up for the 777 a bit here.JSRockit wrote:Bakeded... you're not helping my GAS for this combo... it just seems like the perfect combo for someone who likes 303 type sequencers, wants a synth that is more substantial than a 303, and wants a nice analog synth with no keys that's new.
First, though there are similarities between the two synths, and in fact Jared had the 777 partially in mind when he designed the XS, at the end of the day they are two different things.
Now it's not hard to jump into territory where a synth becomes more substantial then a 303, as the 303's arch was simply so shallow.
But at the same time, you can only defy the arch and limitations of the 303 so much before all the sudden you have something that begins to lose character as an acid device. (hence, though the V-Synths can pull of some DAMN good expanded 303 feats, there is simply so much more to them then that I seriously doubt they'll ever be viewed in mass as "acid" pieces)
Between the XS and 777, I'd say the 777 wins out here.
First, not only does it's arch allow it to head closer to 303 territory, but at the same time, the scope of it's arch is still kept down to a level where at a glance you are completely aware of where everything is at.
The XS on the other hand, I'd say moves just a wee bit beyond that one second glance and you're aware of where all parameters are. Similarly, though it (like many synths), can whip out 303 like timbres, it ultimately does have a significantly different character.
In the realm of sheer out oddness, the 777 also definitely tops out.
Yes, it's arch is more limited then the XS; but the amount of uncommon features it carries is higher than the XS.
42 db Filter, Continuously variable wave shape for the Osc, the fact that one of it's Osc has a slight high pass filter being ran over the square (Osc A that is), Phase distortion with variable depth, and if it's an older 777, granted the volume spikes, but the overdrive is about a billion times more aggressive then that of the XS. Then you have oddities like CV Warp. Just a whole lot of oddities packed into that thing that even if one begins to include VA markets, they still end up as features rarely seen.
Both synths I truly feel are great.
And though if someone were looking for the a 777 part 2, I'd tell them they might want to look at the XS. I would not be making that statement under the feeling of "The XS IS the 777 part 2"; more so just that it does have a good amount of similarities and a deeper arch....it's no 777 part 2, but probably is the closest thing there is to such.
So that all said, I'd stop shy of saying view the XS as a 777.
