Synths on David Bowie's 'Dance Magic Dance'

. . . in particular, the very open and square(?) sounding bass synth (FM?), and the screaming lead synth.

And, actually, I'm less interested in the specific instrument than I am in tips on recreating the general sound.

Any thoughts?

(you can hear it here: . The lead sound doesn't come in until about 3:16).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labyrinth_(album) was done by Trevor Jones, who used a Fairlight and Synclavier.

I think you could do the bass sound by layering the DX bass (use EQ to bring out the highs or simply control a 6-op FM synth with a keyboard that has a velocity up to 127) with something analogish (2- or 3- osc Juno-like bass with a squarewave an octave lower on osc 3.
