Pointer Sisters - Jump -what synth? (TOTALLY NOT VAN HALEN!)

Post by Sir Ruff » Sun Oct 05, 2008 1:18 am

Jump... no, not THAT jump!!!

The brassy pads are what I'm curious about? They are very thik and warm-what I like to imagine obie brass sounds like in my head...

(Funnily enough I have a very strong inkling that it was an oberheim-an OBX? (which would be the same as VH-Jump... doh])

But maybe it could be a P5 too? Anyone know?

I know for sure that an Oberheim OB-Xa was used for Jump. You can clearly see it in the music video. Not sure about the Pointer Sisters though. Yo Micke...

I'd rather not give his name, but the previous and original owner of my Jupiter 8 assured me he used it on tour with the Pointer Sisters until around 1990.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

From what I've read, the Pointer Sisters used a Prophet 5 and a Jupiter-8 pretty heavily on that album.

Ok, so prophet 5 or jup 8... well, I got the p5 part potentially right. Those brass stabs sound so chunky... I was really assuming it was something american. Do they sound distinctly jupiter to anyone? Maybe my ears are deceiving me!

For the record, we'll ignore you said this (album was obx, tour was obxa, and this thread is not about that song!)

Actually you be wrong. Album was an OB-Xa, the OB-X can't do splits which is clearly done on the song 1984. But sorry for the confusion then.

Are we talkin' about Van Halen's "Jump" now ?
Van Halen used an OB-X for that particular song, with an OB-Xa for the live performances (see the videoclip of Van Halen's "Jump").
For the Pointer Sisters my guess would be Roland JP-8. Sounds pretty much like the brassy sounds coming out of my Jupiter-8 anyway...

Van Halen's Jump was OBXa on the album, and OB-8 live. So you guys are "off by one" in the Obie product line. AFAIK VH never used OBX, they went to the Xa after the Prophet-5 turned out to be too unreliable.

Hot For Teacher is the only halfway decent song on that shitty, sell-out album, and OB is a brand of tampon. So, who cares?!

Now back to the Pointer Sisters, and 10 demerits for straying off track.

God... there must be a joke here:

Q: What do you get when you put a bunch of synth nerds in a room with an oberheim...

A: I dunno, which model?

#-o

blah. it's late.

Anyways, I think my question's been answered-all signs point to jup-8 (much to my surprise). Somebody lock this thread before VH and OB can be mentioned in the same sentence again!

Actually you're wrong, it was an OB-12 on the album and an Ion when they play live, you can hear it when you listen to Jexus' demos. They just put it in an OB-8 case to confuse you nerds.

Pointed Sisters' "Jump" = Prophet 5 layered with JP-8

Van Halens's "Jump" OB-Xa

I think we can all agree that the only Jump that really ever mattered was Jump In The Fire, which contained no synths at all, so case closed.
