Dave Smith doesn't seem to have suffered by not using Sequential Circuits, but it is strange to think of being in a situation where your last name is a trademark that you can't use commercially...

I don't see any problems if he Goes with TOM Oberheim...

We'd all just say oberheim anyway...

And if that logo matters that much to you for you to believe its really an oberheim... Uhh.. I dunno... Make a sticker :P'

But yknow, I'm a new-gen synth maniac, so I don't have any nostalgic warm fuzzies for alot of stuff...

I think Tom Oberheim interments has a good nostalgic ring to it and it would help separate his new ventures from that horrid OB-12.

It would be nice if Gibson could give him licensing rights to use the Oberheim name.

If Bob Moog got away with it (here in the UK), why wouldn't Tom Oberheim?

If the logo is so important, don't buy the new synth. Stick with a pre-ECC model, anything from the original SEM(s) to the Xpander and Matrix 12.

Okay, I don't mean that. Seriously, what's in the name? The DSI product line may not be remotely the same as the Prophet 5, but I'd like to believe that it still bears Dave's essence.

I wonder what Gibson would charge Tom Oberheim to have his own name and logo back.
The greatest thing we ever have is the will to survive.

Rest in peace, Dr. Robert Moog.

Why stop there? "Tom Oberheim Internal Mints". For those times when a gaseous yet musical moment can be made most fragrant.

i could only speculate- Gibson is a huge company that does business around the world and they clearly have formal ownership terms in writing regarding the use of the name Oberheim. plus, IP laws obviously differ from country to country.

incidentally, i think Tom Oberheim also can't use the word "Electronics" in his business name.

I hope that whatever comes out of Tom's great mind will be affordable for a humble musician!

but like, why would we want him to? it totally wouldn't be the same! you'd be playing it and thinking the whole time "I really wish I just had an Oberheim"

Same with Moog now-like who would've ever wanted a product called big fuzz or super muff or briar farm or Realistic when you could just have a real analog moog. I know the voyager is only partially analog, but at least it says "Moog", so it's basically close enough.

At least with dave smith instruments, and that new name, you totally forget that he used to be SCI or invented midi or whatever, and you just appreciate the MEK for what it is.... you're not playing it going, I wish I had anything with SCI on it, even a Prelude... but they're polyphonic analog synths anyways, so they're like a totally different beast from the MEK... but I bet they compliment each other well.

Isn't there a recurring theme on VSE of people complaining about hipsters driving the price of moogs up because they want to be seen on stage playing a moog? Not to say you're a hipster, but is the name really that big a deal?

hipster? moi? ha... I dunno about them driving up prices, but there is a recurring theme of me posting totally sardonic comments that people take seriously.
