Mid & High string sounds on "Blade Runner" score ?

Post by THM » Sat Oct 18, 2008 6:26 pm

Hi guys,

Can somebody help me out about the question if the overall string sound on the Blade Runner soundtrack (especially the mid and high strings, the ones with aftertouch are clearly a CS-80...) are coming from a Yamaha CS-80 too - like the major part of the other Blade Runner sounds - or rather from a Roland String Machine (VP-330 Vocoder string section or RS-202).
I read several sources and some say it's also the CS-80, some say it's a Roland VP-330 he used, some said RS-202.

Micke or other experts here ?

Some say Roland RS-505 Paraphonic.

Hmm...Micke, help! :D

cheers,

Well, the choir parts are clearly from the VP330, Vangelis used it quite a lot at the time.. I'd wager that the string sounds are from from the VP330 as well. Anyways, the string sounds on Bladerunner have a sound that I heavily associate with Roland stringers.

I don't know how the RS-202 compares to the VP330, regarding their string sounds, but incidentally, VSE user Sam (sonate from synthforum.nl) who owns a VP330 has an RS-202 for sale. Maybe he will chime in at some point :)

I'm pretty sure Vangelis used both the CS-80 and VP-330 for the mid and high strings on BR, either on their own or in combination. Some of the sound textures on that score sound huge so I bet they did lots of overdubs.

To the best of my knowledge Vangelis never used a RS-202 or RS-505.
