So Rowlf the Dog plays an ARP...

Post by WhinyLittleRunt » Sun Nov 30, 2008 5:08 pm

I wish I had a video clip but I was watching the Muppet Movie last night (don't ask) and in the scene where Kermit is singing with Rowlf in the restaurant you can make out a synth next to him that very much resembles an Odyssey. It never gives a good shot but it's got knobs and sliders all over it.

Anyone ever notice this?

Possibly. Remember, Hensen and his original team of Muppet-teers were a bunch of long-haired hippies, so it's also quite likely that he was based on just someone around, though the resemblance to Skunk Baxter is undeniable.

The Muppet Show, along with Sesame Street, always had an eclectic group of characters (as shown by the variety of projects Hensen Productions undertook throughout his years) that mirrored society. Due to the nature of the people involved, most were quite gentle, even if they were serious "pokes" at established figures. This mirroring also showed up in the sets and props they used, including their instruments. Watch the show on DVD and you'll see not only fake instruments that are quite close to the real thing, but also actual instruments mixed in with them. Quite, quite clever.

So I have a 2-year old and we watch The Muppet Movie constantly. As soon as I spotted the Arp I had to google to confirm lol.

Also when The Electric Mayhem perform 'Can You Picture That?' You can clearly see a Roland TR-77 drum machine. I guess they have to fall back on it when Animal gets out of control.

On some episode, I've seen a minimoog in Dr. Teeth's rig but he wasn't playing it.

In another episode (Elton John's?), Dr. Teeth is not only playing a Mini Moog but also something that vaguely resembles an ARP 2600 Grey Meanie. I'm sure it isn't one but...

Oh, and in another episode he's playing a Yamaha YC-45D.

Wasn't the guitar player named Floyd Pepper?

Indeed he was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Teeth_ ... ric_Mayhem
EDIT: Err, appears Floyd was the bass player. Janice was the guitarist. :D
