Coldplay X&Y Album string sounds

Post by alandoyle » Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:28 am

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum so hopefully I'm posting to the correct place. I've searched Google a number of times and also the VSE search engine and can't find an answer to my question so hopefully one of you synth gurus can help.
Coldplay make extensive use of string sounds on the X&Y album and in particular on the track "White Shadows" (it's especially audible in the last 30 to 60 seconds of that track). The sound seems like a vintage synth from the 70's or 80's to me based on my hazy memories of that time. Does anyone know what machine (or soft synth or sampler) this was played from ? Much appreciated. Alan (Melbourne, Australia)
....great forum by the way !! :D

You should ask Bryan Eno.

I know that he is a hardcore Yamaha fan. But he also owns a lot of other brands ...
It is much easier to be a good equipment purchaser than to be a great musician.

Eno produced their latest one, but not X&Y

I wonder what they used
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

I remember reading that they used a CS-80 on that album. It's on wikipedia so it must be true.

If you look on the inside of the album sleeve there is a bandroom photo of the band jamming and Chris Martin is sitting behind a CS-80. So maybe that's what he's using? I've seen them onstage with a Voyager but I think the synth playing comes from offstage live.

Thanks folks - very helpful feedback. I suspected that it might be the CS80 and so now I should dust off my CS80V VSTi and see if I've got a similar patch in the presets, or maybe (eeek - scary!!) try to create one myself
Thanks for the very quick replies also folks.......Alan

More hints?
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

Do you have any suggestion hfinn as to what it is then ? Majority of replies say probably CS80, but you disagree. Can you tell me why you are confident it is not a CS80 ? Cheers and thanks.....Alan

I have a CS-80 and it doesn't sound like that at all. The strings on the coldplay album sound more modern as if from a triton or similar and it's known that they use one. That would be my guess. The only reason people are saying the 80 is because of the picture in the CD booklet. I'm not saying that there is no 80 on the album, but the majority of it is not.
