Ok - I'm actually tossing this idea around right now except it's the "one drum machine / one synth" question.

Nord LEad 2X - For the type of music and quirky, non-analog, shall I say, sounds I'm in to, this one would have to stay.

The tough call would be between the LP and the MEK. The LP is so ballsy and easy to knock up huge basses which is what I use it for most of the time among other duties.

The MEK - not the greatest for live knob tweaking IMO but I don't play live. I'm still not happy with those steppy encoders but it's an awesome sound design machine and the only synth I own with aftertouch. :)
Damn it! I think LP would have to go. :(

Everything else can go.

Easy one.

My Andromeda A6 and Ensoniq SQ-80.

Yes...I would pick the SQ-80 over my Voyager, Octave Cat, SH-1, MS-10 and SH-101.

For what I do, I'd probably sell my Akai AX60 and keep my Korg Triton Extreme and X3. The two Korgs are seeing the most action right now, and I haven't had to break the Akai out in over six months.
Waveforms, and filters, and knobs. Oh my!

i like the way you put it. same here cept its A6 and Jupiter 8. they both "talk to me" when i use em unlike many other instruments.

truth be told, based on the pure sound character, i'd could perhaps have a Prophet rev2 instead of A6 here, BUT with all A6 powerful additions like sequencer, multitimbral, most importantly velocity and multimode filters ... you get the picture.

since its not a synth, and therefore doesnt count in this "essential pair" listing, id most definetely have to have a Rhodes 73 next to these two, to be entirely happy. and ton of fx and analog outboard please. thank you.

I'd keep the Andromeda and the Kurzweil K2600.

it does not surprise me that the SQ80 is well-represented.

That's how I was thinking of it too. There's no way that anyone would be able to separate me from my Rhodes or any of my organs.

JD-990 (controlled by my ReMOTE) and the Juno-60.

I like the Juno for its simplicity and immediacy. No menus.

I like my JX, but I can still get lush pads with the JD + one of my effects units.

Apologies to those who take offence at people daring to reply to threads over a week old, but I find this one fascinating, not least of which reading through and what choices you made in 2009 vs what is in your gear list today!

I guess it just shows you can only make judgements based on how you feel at the time about gear, there is no definitive answer in many cases, as things change, music style, need for cash, novelty factor wearing off etc...

having said this, for me it would have to be the JD-800 and JX-3P as keepers (out of what I have/had), I feel those (OK along with some software such as FM8 etc) would give me what I need in a very usable and pleasingly musical sense above my other gear, D-50 would probably be there too if I didn't now have a JD-800.

Anyone who replied to this topic and changed the choices care to divulge what changed their mind about their most beloved pieces of gear? :)

Well, the XL-7 is sold, the V-Synth is sold and I'm not really using the MEK any more, just waiting on someone to buy it. The reason? Modular. :D

I've picked up an Ultranova as a nice light poly for gigging and a Nord G2 as a swiss army knife and synth that can be played with drum triggers but the drummer in my band has it it most of the time.
