That's like asking what is the best motor vehicle ever...

Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

If there was a "best synth", that's what everyone would have.

Best analog synth? Digital? Mono? Poly? FM? Additive? Vector?
Two VCO: thanks to the push rods, one can choose several forms of waves at the same time!
(from a Babelfish translation of a Jupiter-6 site)

Yamaha: Motif XS6, TX802 Roland: D-550 Alesis: A6 Andromeda

Best synth ever is the laptop computer.

Has the highest polyphony, is small and portable, can do additive, vector, virtual analogue, FM, sample based and other forms of synthesis, the architecture is completely modular, you can insert hundreds of different effects anywhere you want in the signal chain and you can choose from a huge number of different controller interfaces and audio output modules that go from very affordable to high-end. Also has built in audio recorder, midi sequencer and fully programmable arpeggiator, is user upgradable and has a wide variety of storage options. It even runs on batteries so you can play it on the couch, and can burn your songs as a cd when you're done.

the best synth ever is the synth that is a) available for the job at hand (affordable to the user and not broken) and b) has had its depths plumbed by said user so that it can be made to not only do everything it was designed to do but also some things that the designer never intended/imagined.

that is the best synth ever. for me it might be the evolver*. for you it might be the memorymoog. for another it might be a dx-7, a little phatty, a casio cz-1, or a rompler + imagination/recording savvy.

(*this is not to say i have plumbed the evolver's depths...just a quixotic goal of mine)

ok: the answer is "polyevolver/memorymoog hybrid"

I vote laptop computer. especially those realistic sounds that a midi file makes.

hardware wise, most versatile seems to me(although ive never used one) a nord stage. modeled organs and pianos, fm, VA, and wavetable synthesis...an "everything" keyboard for church worship group/weekend warrior keyboard rocker

Genre's sure are getting weirder. Is that an avant garde style? Or is it missing "core" at the end?

Midi files are just the notes, they make the sound of whatever you play them with. :thumbright:

I doubt anyone here has played every single synth ever made (or anyone for that matter).
