the difference between moogs arps and 303s is that moogs and arps are not easy to emulate

if you crank the resonance on any synth and put it through a bit of overdrive you can have a convincing 303 emulation

the fact that the 303 has a seriously limited architecture is what makes it so easily to emulate

the multitude of sounds available to the minimoog and the arp are part of what make them so special

give me an MFB synth 2 and a futureretro mobius and I could have more convincing 303 sounds

stuff that you hear on records that you think are 303s arent

i use fatboy slim's 'everybody needs a 303' as my example
No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

So what are they then? And what recordings are you referring to? You do realize FBS DOES have a 303, right?
Synths:
Avalon Bassline . TB-03 . JU-06 . MX-1 . Blofeld . MicroMonsta . Akai S5000
Drum Machines:
TR-09 . TR-8

I can't believe I'm entertaining this stupid debate, but here it goes:

I only had time to check out the revolution against the 303, but they sound pretty similar to me.

any recording

if i played you tracks that use 303 style sounds you would never be able to pick out the real one

whereas the moog sound is something that can very easily be picked out in a mix

all people that argue about 303s sound similar.

Hello, everyone. This is my first post here.

I am very happy about some synth demos of the eml 101 and steiner parker synthacon I found here.
Rarely seen here in Germany, those units.

I did not own any ungly sounding synths to date, but I did not like the sound of the yamaha cs-20. Not my world
of sounds.
I bought a sunsyn some time ago and was wondering about the clean sound of the filter and the whole unit, beeing more a fan of the ARP Odyssey. Ok, maybe I played the Korg MS-20 too long.

Don't get me wrong I've heard people get some really great sounds out of the K4. It just didn't inspire me and the filter pops were really annoying. It felt cheap (it was, that is why I had one in the first place!) and had a nasty keyboard. Not to my taste at all.

And that's the point really; it's all about what appeals to you individually. For instance, some people have said in this thread they don't like the D-50 or the MS2000, fair enough. Yet I like the D-50 so much I have bought three of them. The MS2000 is one of my first choices for creating bass patches. Personally, I could not care less about owning 303 and PPG is enough to bring me out in a cold sweat of hatred. It’s all so subjective.

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing.

What about the ARP Electric Piano? That was a worse product than the Avatar.

IIRC, it didn't sound bad. Problem was, they all fell apart. :violent1: I've read where Phil Dodds, when he was in the process of wrapping up ARP after the bankruptcy, got into a huge argument with the creditors about funding warranty service on the EPs that were still coming in in droves.

The Quasimidi Sirius was bad as well. Though I managed to write a few great songs with it, it was just not very good sounding. A good sketchpad but not for the sound designer in me.
Maybe I got a really good Poly 800 mkII but I love mine. I toyed with it occasionally at first until I went over to my brother in law's and he showed me his EX-800. It had like a bunch of wonderful cosmic, robotic pads in it and I went home and did a couple on my Poly and really started to get into it. I have to go back and write them all down next time. I wasn't into my CZ-5000 either until I went through the sound book and really grasped programming it.

And I haven't even put the Moog Slayer/VCF input Mod in yet.

But a lot of this discussion is what a synth does for you. And the Poly doesn't do a lot for a lot of people. Synths that I was excited to get but didn't do much for me were...

Waldorf Pulse (too sterile or too crunchy, no middle ground, crappy filter sweeps, not my sound)
Waldorf Q (didn't get into it enough probably but I never could get a sound that hit my ears right)
Proteus 2000 (bought a vintage keys keyboard later for $150 and is much handier and better sounding than the 2000)

Yeah the only thing I want to jettison now out of my gear is a Roland R8m. Had the dance and electronic cards. Sampled and tweaked the h**l out of them. Don't have any cards anymore, not strong enough on its own, but can't even give it away for $100.

Everything else I have right now, I like. Really...until I need to sell something to pay for something else...next time that's going to be a tough call.
