The most with the least

Post by cornutt » Sun Mar 22, 2009 4:24 pm

A comment on the "worst synth" thread got me thinking: What is the most you or anyone you know of has managed to do with the least amount of gear? Back in the '80s, I knew of a guy in Ft. Lauderdale who did an entire album with a Micromoog and a few stomp boxes.
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

My bandmate once did an EP just using Fruityloops.

I've done an entire album with just this:
  • Sequential Circuits: Pro~One
  • Roland: R8 mkII drum machine
  • Roland: VS-880EX digital 8-track
On another note, DJ Shadow's album: Endtroducing was done entirely on an Akai MPC-60. Very impressive IMHO.

I did a piss-take album ten years ago with only the Minimoog and drums provided by an organ percussion section and a couple with 'soundcard' drums, played on the PC keyboard.
I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

From 1991 to 1996 all of the music I wrote and recorded, drums, keys, guitar, and often backing vocals was written, recorded, sequenced, and mixed all within the confines of an Ensoniq EPS-16+ with 4 megs of RAM.

There was someone in Keyboard mag's "Discoveries" column back in the late '80s who supposedly did everything on an Emulator II.

Not sure if you'd consider it "least" but the earliest synth albums like Switched on Bach, Silver Apples of the Moon, etc. were done by multitracking a (relatively small) modular synth. Many hobbyists today have larger modular setups than Carlos and Subotnick had back then.

What about The Yellow Album?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I know of quite a few people who have recorded several CD's using just a Gameboy and some freeware recording software.
