Korg in 1977: "We don't need to put pulse width modulation on the MS-20, it has two oscillators! Pulse width modulation is only for faking a dual oscillator sound with a single oscillator. No one would ever want that on a dual oscillator synthesizer."

Well, Yamaha was doing it right with the CS15. Too bad it doesn't sound as raw and dirty as the MS's. Imagine the Korg MS10, CS15 and MS20 having a really hardcore gangbang -----> Korgamaha CMS-17.

*3 OSC
*3 VCF (HP/LP/BP, all resonant and selfoscillating)
*Semi-modular
*PWM on all 3 OSC with 3 different dedicated PWM-LFOs
* Same pitchbend as on CS15

etc.
Haha that would be hardcore man!

Soon, my CS-15 will arrive from Japan! :D

Another vote for Yamaha CS synths. Even the CS01 with its DCO has the same sweet PWM sound. I use a CS-5 and CS-10 together. Layered PWM is not really that useful I think, it's too much.

The Jupiter-4 makes great string sounds when pwm is used, one of its great assets.

I own a few of the synths mentioned in the thread.
My fave is the Ms-10, when modulated by the lfo, it's absolutely massive.
I couldn't believe it's not present on the Ms-20.
I think having that function makes the Ms-10 different enough than the Ms-20 to not be considered as a cheaper version.

I have a question :

Do you think a pwm'd 1-osc bass sound could be consistently fatter than a 2-osc bass sound due to absence of phasing between the oscillators?

It depends on your definition of "fat," of course.
However, I've always personally found that two-osc bass sounds lack the bassy depth and focus of one osc bass sounds... and since I would say that detuned oscillators do not fat make, my answer would be more towards "yes."

I never knew the CS01 had a DCO!!!!

Layered PWM is pretty intense, but I have found a few uses for it. :)

I can see I need to make a CS-15 video. :)

That gangbang synth would be cool... as long as all three oscs and filters each had their own sets of envelopes and a separate VCA... and all three separate synths could be routed through each other at any point.

Yes fat is subjective, I think I meant massive in the bass department, lots of low-end without sounding too loud, that kind of thing :)

Yeah you should definitely put up a CS15 video. We need more of those.
You thinking about the feedback technique?

Seperate envelopes and VCAs of course. That was the "etc".

Ya, that's why it has glissando instead of portamento. Nice.

That's cheating.
