Coolest modern niche synths...

Post by synthmax » Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:50 pm

Lately I've been looking around at interesting modern niche synths, such as those from Futureretro, Vermona, etc. What are your favorite ones? Big volume producers excluded!

Actually I have not, and that seems like some interesting stuff! Which ones do you personally fancy?

Personally? Personally.
I have a bunch of disclaimers about indivudual preference and the genre of music you make and your experience and what you're looking for etc. All of that stuff that says only YOU know what YOU would like..

But asked directly....
I like the Andro A6 (modern since its rerelease or recent manuf. run). I like the Moog Voyager.
Below that (price-wise) is anything Studio Electronics....Voyager rack...Prophet desktop...

Digital...the Access TI range...
Deskers....the Evolver...TI Snow...Bloefeld...Korg Radias....
so many choices...

Okay, if I wnated somethng very boutique-y....very unique like no one else will have this...
aside from a custom modular....

Metasonix.
http://www.analoguehaven.com/metasonix/s1000/
I keep looking at the s-1000 Wretch machine, but then realize I wouldn't get much music usage out of it. For some reason just the very idea attracts me.

RIGHT NOW. My next (purchased) piece will be the Radikal Technologies Spectralis II
http://www.raditec.de/spectralis2.html

I have very high hopes for this piece.

On Analogue Haven, I keep looking at all the little analog synths that are so affordable and get ready to snag one and then realize I have better weapons in the arsenal and most of them lack features I rely on for my production style. I still do think about getting a bunch of them and strining them together.

Or to just dive in and go heavy...
Who doesn't want one of these?

And now Doepfer has just made a Moog-like synth....so....it's either a wonderful time to be into synths or very confusing and frustrating...http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm

I like your style. I certainly would add all those to my list, if I could. I noticed that AnalogueHeaven does have super-nichy one-function type synths, which I can't quite see getting right now, but something like Vostok is great!

I heard this gritty demo on YouTube: I would probably run something like that through a basic effects chain and beef up the base/kick, and ..... oh yeah.

.... and I just heard demos of Metasonix Wretch Machine. Wow. It's instant Prodigy sound.

Cool. I watched this one and I just....got...angry with the camera man.

Feels like a squandered opportunity.
Why not have (cool) effects on the vocals?
Why not say something meaningful?
Why not JUST STAY between the girl and his tweaks?

It's like the cameraman wanted to show you ONLY the most uninteresting parts of the scene.
And he didn't move once from his spot. Ughh.

Anyhoo- I think the drums in your video link were from something else so you could use any beefy drum module.
It's a ripping sound for sure.

Quasimidi Sirius, JP-8080, Radias, Nord Lead 2, X-Station, Z1, PEK

Yeah, I could see you adding an analogue super-synth to that set up.

There are only about 90 of these (and only two red)

My collection of synths is for sure stuck in the early 2000's (except for PEK). That's part result of thinking only of "mass market" and part of that is simply not knowing the interesting choices out there. Everyone seems to lust after the classic synths, but the more I look, the more I find new concepts and cool modern takes on the classics. I'd love to add FR Revolution, SE-1X or Voyager, or even something like Vostok.

I actually want to highlight the Metasonix S-1000 again. The link below is to the company page, which has several demos. I didn't like all of them, but most of them I do. I have yet to hear another source of such a smooth yet gritty sound. To my ears it's candy. The 2900 price tag is a bit rough though.

I particularly liked "Wretch vs Wretch Take 1" and the first "Multi Demo":

I love Griffin's suggestions (some of which I own), but as Droolmaster mentioned, hands down, the most interesting one out there is the Rozzbox. It's a living, breathing, organic piece of sonic art. Every time I turn it on, I feel like I'm tuning in a radio station from outer space. Limitless possibilities. I was tempted by the Metasonix Wretch Machine also, but the tube sound seemed too harsh and musically limited. The Rozz has the tube option if you want to use it and it's nice to be able to blend it in with the analog or digital filters.

jomox drum machines, c-thru's axis controllers and metasonix fx all look wicked to me.

but for niche synthesizers nothing is as interesting to me as the modulars out there. personally i already have an insane amount of money plowed into the Buchla 200e, but the Modcan series B, Cwejman, Wiard and of course Serge all look pretty stellar. i'm still kicking myself for not jumping on those Wiard modules someone sold on this board a while back, what a steal.

stuff i think is cool, and daydream about..

i like studio electornics stuff like atc-xi. new Kyma Pacarana - a digital synthesis playground. i'm seriously considering it , once i can muster that kind of dough. on the modular front, i'm intrigued by Emulator Archive's ARP2600 clone modules of VCO and VCF. i'd love to build some and put it in my modular. Vermona's analog drums DRM1 mkIII, and acidlab's new 808 clone Miami.. mmm.. and, not really synths but close, im into some crazzed pedals that feature filters/ringmods etc.. like Copilot FX. think id like to have an antenna2 arround for mangling.

For me, it's the original Evolver. I know many people hate it but it's certainly a unique concept.

Honorable mention to the Vermona Perfourmer.

Disclaimer: I've owned both
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

All I gotta say is "wow!". Truly so much to get excited about. The great thing abou niche synths is that they might be too limited in general, but do something no other synth does. I think that's part of making a true classic.

Hey clusterchord, Kyma Pacarana is basically a massive DSP board for an uber sound filtering? I checked out acidlab.de, and couldn't find mention of M1NM1. Is it too new or too old?

Rozzbox: From the demo's I'ver heard, it's exactly what I would describe is radio station from outerspace! Could anyone point to a demo that is very representative of the capabilities? I have so far been disappointed, though I get the feeling most demo-ers don't know what they are doing (yet).
