Which Synth Had The Worst User Interface Ever?

Post by HideawayStudio » Tue Apr 21, 2009 8:15 pm

OK - Here's a question for you all - which synth/sampler had the WORST user interface ever??

For me it's got to be Roland D-110 - which is a shame because there are actually some interesting sounds to be had out of this LA cheapie with a little work.... The UI must have been designed by a mad man though! :?

Others rating poorly for seriously frustrating UI's (but not the way they sound): :(

Sequential Prophet 2000/2 samplers
Waldorf MicroWave I
Yamaha TX-802

I would also say all DX synths (bar DX1 & 5) but after some thought that's not fair because FM is never going to be easy to convey on a small screen and I think Yamaha did the best they could considering this. The UI on the SY/TG77 is actually pretty good.

And as a contrast - the best UI IMHO for such a tiny display has to be E-mu EMAX series - I can practically use my EMAX II's with my eyes shut - brilliant samplers! :D

I see you have'nt tried the Yamaha TX16W.
I have'nt tried anything even remotely as frustrating, counterintuitive and simply ARRRGGHHHHH ever.
Those synths you're suggesting are childs play compared to the TX16W.

Roland D70 and (I know it's not a synth), Akai XE8 drum module.

Romplers, if you want to make you own sound be prepared to spend a few hours.
Hammond RT-2, Hammond M3, Hammond L-102, Rhodes mk1 suitcase 88, Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, Yamaha TX-802, Fender Twin Reverb, Leslie 45

It's honestly a tie for me:

Yamaha FS1r: a shame because it sounds wonderful.

Alesis QS6: Sounds really weren't bad at all, but I never could come to grips with its interface. The XP-50 I got after selling it was a breeze in comparison.
Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster | Squier CV Duo-Sonic | e6400 Ultra | Blofeld | a bunch of effects

Both sound too damn good though...

How exactly? Everything is right there, there are no sub-menus, and there's even a big knob to change all parameters! (rather than ridiculous up/down tabs).... I've barely scanned through the menu but already know how 85% of it works.
There definitely have to be worse samplers out there!
Do you even post on vse bro?

Which is sad because some have great possibilities. I guess most of their buyers [people who just want preset sounds] don't need all the tweaking stuff.

For example, Korg Trinity, Triton, EX5, Fantoms, etc...

Technically not a synth but...Ensoniq Mirage.
FS1R next but for all the flex it really doesn't have any user interface at all.

The Moog Source is pretty kludgy, but the sound more than makes up for it.

Sir Ruff... ya got me all wrong - I adore my P2002 - It's just that I wish to heck it had an LCD on it as I do find myself getting in a knot with it - to be fair it's only been a few months since I restored it so maybe I'm just not used to it's UI - great sound though :)
