What to do with a dead Nord Modular engine?

Post by Pighood » Thu Apr 30, 2009 2:44 am

It needs a new mother board, and I'm over it...

Is it worth auctioning off for its parts? What could it fetch?

Put it on top of the A-100 and see how much dust accumulates before you remember you had one.

I was told by the shop that had it that the motherboard needed to be replaced. No specifics other than that. Didn;t know that only part of it could go bad.

sounds like some repair shop doesn't want anymore business. take it somebody else. call Nord for a list of service centers. if the synth was crushed by a burning semi tanker of sulphuric acid during a twister, then maybe it would be beyond help. don't give up.

You don't understand. I don't WANT to get it repaired.

I'm just wondering if it's worth putting up on Ebay for its parts, or pitching it in a dumpster.

Why don't you just put it on eBay then? If anyone wants it for parts, they'll bid on it.
I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

That's where I was headed. I want to make a FEW bucks (after the fee$), so I should probably begin bidding at $100 and NOT put a Buy It Now option.

Most companies are quite forthcoming with schematics, I have never had any luck getting any from Clavia, they are quite secretive about their circuits, I don't know why, just another box of DSP's like everyone else. I have fixed a couple of Nord's to component level without schematics, but it wasn't much fun, so I understand a tech shop's reluctance to bother with them, I am of a mind to just regard them as un-repairable, I don't have much time for companies that leave their customers in the cold when things go wrong. Great synths, but a liability if they fail unless you are prepared to pay a lot of money for shipping and wait for a long time for a repair, and a big bill if it's out of warranty.

Slap some wheels on it and drag your offspring around in it?

The shop could be completely correct in saying "new motherboard". It's not a vintage analog synth where you can test each part on each board to find out the failed one with a multimeter, replace some caps and call it a day. It's more akin to a computer than anything else - an undocumented computer at that. Once you determine the power supply is functioning you'd be hard pressed to get results.
