My first contact with a keyboard was my dads Technics KN200 PCM keyboard, which he bought in 1989. I had a lot of fun with the Fill-in button and auto-comp presets, it had a nice sustain and celeste effect and also a primitive sequencer. A couple of synth sounds too. I still have it. Much later I bought my first real synth, the Roland D-20. I learned a lot working with that.

My first instrument close to a synth was a Yamaha PSS-470 I got on eBay in Summer, 2005.

My VERY FIRST AND ONLY synth was a Yamaha DX-21 that a friend bought from Stewardson-Strasburg Grade School and High School. He later sold me that synth for $50 so he can go to a christian concert. I have also used my DX-21 to interface with a Yamaha DTX 2.0 electronic drum console, which also contained keyboard sounds on all MIDI channels except for one which is for drum kits. I do use the real Yamaha DX-21 sounds, too.

My first synth was a Korg DS-8. A great FX with delay and flanger... but no reverb ! after llistening to a D50 I went crazy about reverbs... tried to mimic in some way but... no way. Ended selling the DS-8 for a Roland D10 (the D50 was only a dream...)

ALESIS ION!!! thought it could do everything, all it did was give me a head ache, sold the sucker quick, i then bought an oberheim 2 voice, but the first synth i ever played on was a pro-one, through my roommates 800w bass amp, what a beauty..

Juno 106. Not super flexible, but a perfect learning tool for basic synthesis. I think I got a CS01 the same day or the next day.

One of those cheap casio tone bank keyboards.

Believe it or not, their were a few presets that casio had on these cheapies that sounded quite good.

Realistic MG-1 (moog) which I only had for a summer, technically it was borrowed but I spent alot of time with that synth. That fall I got a DX9 at a pawnshop dirt cheap (>150$). I had alot of other 'cheap' synths though before and a portable church organ. I had a PSS470 and PSS570 before the MG-1 but I consider the MG-1 my first real synth even though I now own the PSS's again because I love em :)

Yamaha SY-2

AWESOME synth, I miss it
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

Yup they absolutely have their own character. I'm still using small toy keyboards, easy to get very cheap on flea markets :D
A synthesizer will be for you what you want it to be...
