the multis basically are drum maps, since you can set the key range and transpose of each part.

Yes but then you are using up a whole load of multi slots even though all those sounds are sitting on the same MIDI channel. With a 'proper' dedicated drum map mode you are just mapping a load of individual sounds to keys. The Micron does it that way for instance, not sure about the MicroQ.

I never understood how that worked with other synths..

if a synth is X part multitimbral, how can it also be X + all the extra drum parts... doesnt make much sense to me.

Just because you can map a number of sounds it doesn't mean they have to all play simultaneously. Voices might be limited but full multitimbrality isn't usually a problem for good digital synths.

In the case of the Micron it's quite straitforward, it has eight voices and they can all play different sounds. You can map more sounds than that and it plays what it can at any given time.

ahh I see what you mean.

still, its kinda hard to use up 16 slots on one synth!! (I'd love to hear someone do it with the blofeld though... would be positively lush if the balance could be maintained)
