What 80s songs can the EII's Marcato Strings be heard on?

Post by gcoudert » Fri May 22, 2009 5:54 pm

Following on from the DX7 Tubular Bells thread, I have been looking for examples of the Emulator II's Marcato Strings in my music collection but I am not sure I can actually identify it. Does anybody know of any 80s hits that used that particular sound?

PSB's is a good example....

There are waaayyyy too many tracks to list - suffice to say that alot of 80's films used it also. Check out the atmoshperic closing scene of Oliver Stones 'Wall Street' (1987).

-Pet shop boys " you were always on my mind"
-Ace of base " Wheel of fortune"
- a Charles bronson 's movie (don't know the english title, may be The vigilante II , I remember He use to kill dealers and it ends in fornt of a fountains where he explodes the bad guy with a grenade launcher)

++there are too many to be cited, sorry

Brian May actually plays the staccato chords on a DX-7 in this video from "The Making of One Vision"
(and it doesn't look like it's MIDIed to some other keyboard):

I also spotted a Jup-8, VP-330, Fairlight and a Kurzweil K250 in this clip

Ooh, the synth version of train spotting, my fave :)

Interesting. There's no way, IMHO, that a DX-7 could do a string sound like that. For all we know, he might be layering on the already recorded string sound. And it's really difficult to see what sockets are hooked up on the DX.

The K250 strings are a dead ringer for the EII Marcato strings though, so I reckon it's the Kurz. I've often wondered why they sound so similar. The only difference is that the Kurz loops properly :) Even the position of the multisamples sounds identical.

It's not the Fairlight because that's a IIx, which can't do multisampling (well it can, but not in a useful way!) which would be essential for this sound.

On Live at Wembley '86, Brian May only has a DX7 on stage with him, that he plays some pad openings like "A Kind of Magic" on. Dunno if it's only the DX7 or some other MIDI'd synths we hear though.

I see you have a DX7S. Do you think it's capable of a big bowed string sound like that? If it is, I'l eat my hat. I'm familiar with the type of bowed strings the DX7 can do, they're nice, but they're not the big ensemble like this sound.

I wouldn't say for sure, lots of bands used the DX7 just as a MIDI keyboard because it has so good keyboard action.

Can be heard extensively on Clan of Xymox's first two albums, the eponymous one and Medusa - very identifiable on songs like "A Day", "Cry In The Wind", "After The Call", "Louise" and "Back Door."

The Cure got lots of use of the EII - you can definitely hear the Marcato strings on the three albums Head on the Door/Kiss Me.../Disintegration in "Lullaby", "Prayers for Rain", "The Same Deep Water As You", "Plainsong", "Six Different Ways", "Sinking", "Like Cockatoos" - lots more too.

Front 242 used those strings on Official Version and Front By Front - "Circling Overland" and the low strings in "Headhunter" come to mind.

The Smiths' The Queen Is Dead features the EII quite a bit with the Marcato strings most obvious on "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out."

On New Order's Brotherhood - the strings near the end on "All Day Long." They used the EII extensively, but not much of that particular patch.
“I have stretched ropes from steeple to steeple; garlands from window to window; golden chains from star to star, and I dance.” - Rimbaud

O ya, I didn't think of that, good point.

The Cure's Lullaby is a great one, EII strings doing the hook.

I've a string patch on my DX& (mk 1) that sounds almost exactly like the one May's playing in the clip. Also we don't know what other gear they've got it going through.

I always thought the intro/hook strings on Madonna's 'Papa Don't Preach' were Marcato. Anyone know?
