favorite instrument combinations

Post by dblondin » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:57 am

Sometimes, a not-so-great instrument suddenly becomes cool when layered with something that makes up for its deficiencies. I'd like to hear about your favorite instrument combos and how you use them together (layered, playing in sync, MIDI controlled, etc.) Some of my discoveries:

D50 layered with a JX10
The digital grit of the D-50 paired with the JX's smooth warmth equals gorgeous pads

Regelwerk sending notes to a Yamaha RM50
These two units speak well together and add up to a good sounding and highly interactive drum machine.

Juno 60 playing alongside an OB-Xa
I know this is subjective, but an arpeggiated Juno 60 bass in back of a brassy OBX-a lead sounds particularly full and expressive.

I used to really like the K5000 layered with and running through the Evolver. Set the Evolver to low note priority and mix in some of its waveforms, wind up a little bit of distortion, then play chords on the K5000. Lovely.

I love playing with my V-Synth together with my Nord Modular G2X.
Lately I have turned those two on more than any other synth and I usually play them together

-Wurli 200A + DX7 + Wurlitzer Acoustic '72. Jazzy! Obviously not connected in any way between them.

-And I agree with a D-50+JX, but JX-8P does it for me.

Moog Little Phatty played in unison with a Yamaha CS-15. The relative qualities of waveshapes and slight tracking differences create a lovely, fuzzy, organic sound.

Just remembered my band used to use an Electribe EA-1 and a Poly 800 midi'd together, with the poly's audio going into the EA-1's input and mixing in as osc 2. Sounded great.

:Combination's:
Alesis QS7.1 + Emu XL7
Smooth pads, Awesome effect sounds of the QS7, with The Trance beats and rhythm of the XL7

my favorite:
RedSound DarkStarXP7 + Korg ER1-mkII
Gritty/Dark leads with lots of Filters, backed up with the "toyish sounding" drum loops of the ER1.

JX8P and TX7, JX for the warmth, and a DX attack.
ALso, lately I've been midi'ing my CZ-101 to my Korg CX3 for some interesting things live.

a Poly-800 and some outdated rompler playing organ sounds, layered together. Just altering the volume settings on both will give a lot of variations. There's actually something really charming about the Poly-800's organ sounds (i.e. presets 17 & 27), but coupling them up with something "more realistic" will improve it considerably.

Well, more for just playing than recording I guess.

Continuing the trend:

JX-3P + DX7 II-D - Classic combo for metal/bassy/rhythmic/non-pad sounds :)

JX-8P + D-50 - Pad/Strings Heaven

AN1X + JX-3P - Good for Pads AND some sorta Bass :)

I just ran the Ensoniq Mirage through the MEK last night. What a great combo! The gritty samples on the mirage go together nicely with the digital oscillators on the MEK. I had them midi'd to some great results. The mods on the MEK are just icing. I was controlling the external input volume with things like noise, digital oscs, random lfos, and envelope 3. I'll have to post some examples tonight when I have 3 seconds to myself.

Micron + Oberheim Matrix-1000 can make for surprisingly robust "vintage" synth pads. I also doubled a Mopho triangle lead on a friend's alt-country track with a really filtered square lead on the Microcon I used to have and the two together really had a nice sparkle.

so right you are.

- pad on Andromeda layered with darkpad on JD990. A6 was cream, floating arround, JD gave it focused, robust component.

http://babic.com/MP3/profession/ProfessionsEP.mp3

- Vienna 1st violins, layered with Solina. makes vienna sound less "sampled", more silky. fits mixes better.
- in the late 80s, when this was popular w dance tunes, i'd layer the JX-10 synthbass (preset66 iirc) with SolidBass from DX7.
- FS1R fem breathvox with Emu4 Fem Choir (often w with fazioli solo piano)

fav synth+fx or processing synth->another synth combos:

- OBXa, with relatively open filter with high resonance, rounded by Mutator 24dB filter.
- Waldorf XT, going thru space echo 201

http://www.babic.com/SYN/XT/clc_XT_space_echo.mp3

- Solina or Elka 610 into resonant SH-2 filter/lfo, and tweaked time machine bbd... can you say kraut..
