You can if you want to... ;) Didn't say anything of the sort. It just seems everyone on the internet knows better than the manufacturer, w/o really knowing anything about what's involved.
plikestechno wrote:BUT time has shown us that the technology used to make these new synths is not very expensive
Isn't it? How do we know? Analogue electronics IS expensive next to digital.
plikestechno wrote:If his products are so great why does he slash the h**l out of them down the road?
I presume the initial price is higher to recoup the original investment. Also 10% off is hardly 'slashing the h**l out of them'.
plikestechno wrote:Oberheim's new SEM looks like much better value for the dollar.
Does look good, but it is monophonic.
plikestechno wrote:And for the consumer, new or used, $800 opens a lot of possibilities.
No argument there.

Only? That's pretty awesome for a niche market. And how many subsequently have been resold?
Seems pretty small to me compared to the big boys.

People will create things. Other people will criticze their creations.

Art, music...synths, whatever. It's the circle of life.

Audio in makes more sense on a mono, it's a bit weird having it on a poly I think, as if there's not enough sound coming out of the box to start with, so get a Mopho or an Evolver or an MS20 if that's what you most want to do. I reckon audio in on synths gets used quite a bit less than people would like to think anyway.

Also notice that the feedback gain is now automatable where the input gain on the Mopho is manual so that's something gained (boom boom) and could be part of the reason for doing it that way.

Yeah they're totally different really aren't they. The SEM also doesn't have 16 step sequencers with access to nearly very parameter or any patch storage. Obviously the only sensible answer is to get both.

I wouldn't necessarily use Audio In at the same time I was using the synth itself, but it's nice for a synth to be able to double as a processor for other gear, and I use the option plenty when it's available.

Mostly I just thought it was weird that the Evolvers (mono and poly versions) have it, the Mopho has it, but it's missing from the Prophet '08 and this new one. Just seems a little random.

can anyone give me the backstory on dave smith's phobia of non-disgusting fonts?

this took about about 2 minutes and is already a drastic improvement:

You know, the typeface of the logo has no bearing on the fact that i want one. If you don't like it, put a strip of black gaffer tape over it.

i am most probably going to buy one in a few months, and if i do, i am most definitely putting a strip of white masking top over the top of the log and writing "tetra" with a black artline 90.

For me, hardware needs to look and feel great, sound aside. Otherwise I'll just use emulations. DSI makes consistently awful looking faceplates for their stuff, does he whip it up in paint himself?
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

That's weird; I think the P'08 has among the most tasteful front panels out there. De gustibus non disputandum est, I guess.

Actually, I think the way the P08 looks is quite nice too. But for me it's an anomaly in a line of otherwise ugly looking faceplates
